Can someone please tell me how to view my music library by the genres I have embedded in the actual music files themselves?
I have “Prefer local metadata” checked, and “Embedded Tags” selected in the Genres popup.
I rescan the library again and again and still in the dashboard I cannot get a view “by genre” just the option to search for a specific genre, but none of my own ones show up in the search list.
Rescanning a library doesn’t help. Tags are only read when the file is initially added to your server. To re-read the tags, you’ll need to Plex Dance the files.
Oh interesting. So remove the folder from the library, let it rebuild and then re-add the folder?
Not rescanning tags seems like a bad limitation, I’m “fixing” tags all the time

Hmmm… I’m positive I’ve changed tags (misspelling, etc) and then did a refresh and the new tags are updated properly. That was supposed to be one of the improvements with the new music system -the elimination of the Plex dance. I think you might have to refresh at the artist level in most cases, but I’m not sure about that.
I think a “re-fresh” of the metadata is the key, rescanning probably does as @anon18523487 suggested, and the tags are not read.
Err, that might explain a lot. You can only tag tracks, you can’t tag albums/artists. Totally confused now
You ain’t the only one that doesn’t understand that flaw in Plex Music. Genres you add to track are read and added to the album’s list of genres, but Plex does not recognize track genres.

all music programs since the beginning of time use tags.
but not plex.
plex will read them, sometimes, but it does not write tags.
and it mainly likes to get its own metadata and store it in its private library (not along side the actual files).
I haven’t checked recently but you might be right. There was a change to refesh so it would gather new data. I wasn’t sure if that included embedded tags.
So I must confess I’m kind of shocked considering this is a server that prides itself on storing local media and making it accessible easily. I added my music because I wanted a music app to cast and assumed Plex would be perfect.
I completely removed and added the shares again and waited while it added everything, now I only have one genre visible (Rock), none of the others. Just shaking my head because as someone else pointed out, every music player out there just works with embedded tags. Genuinely shocked.
Off to find another casting app then…
