Music Videos stutter in browser

Not sure this one rises to the territory of something I’m stressed about solving, but I thought I’d bring it to attention as music videos are such a little used feature.

I recently added a bunch of videos to my server using the global folder. They add fine, show up in my library fine, and play fine on my TV’s webOS app and on both the Android and AndroidTV apps.

Strangely, they stutter every 5 or so seconds when being played back in any chromium-based browser on any of my PCs. They are the only videos that do this.

Any reason why this may be the case? Or have i stumbled into some weird bug?

Server Version#: 1.27.1.5916
Player Version#: Current plex.tv

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? Do you have similar problems with other videos or is this only impacting the music videos?

Only happens with music videos. TV shows, movies, etc all playback fine.

What is interesting is that Plex Web seems to be transcoding the audio, where it’s not doing that on any other device, and also not doing that on any other video played in browser. Perhaps this is an AAC/Chromium issue?

Browsers are the most limited environment when it comes to supported media formats. So the browser requiring some media to be transcoded isn’t a surprise. On the other hand… transcoding stereo audio shouldn’t put all that much load to your server to cause it to stutter.

What is the frame rate of these videos?
What is the refresh rate of the monitor?
Are these two numbers divisible without remainder?
If not, there will always be the odd video frame which will look a bit weird, since it will be used to resync the frame rate of the video with the frame rate of the screen.
This is the very reason why more sophisticated video players allow you to switch the refresh rate of the screen to be identical to the frame rate of the video. (Plex HTPC or the Roku for instance)

That could be it. The media file above is 24FPS.

The thing is, it occurs with absolutely any media that I add as an extra, regardless of source. It’s also a full on audio skip as well, while everything stays in sync, so it seems to be skipping whole frames.

What’s particularly interesting though, is adding the music video as a TV episode makes it play without error.
