Mute and unfriend Question

ok another data collection issue, so what data are Plex keeping even after unfriending someone?

example, you set a “Friend” to muted, you then unfriend the user. (The Friend does not have any libraries shared with them)

You go back to the list of “Friends” on your profile page and the user has gone. This is what you expect. I would have thought that should delete the connection between me and that friend

But if you then click on manage, you get a list of friends, but the one you just unfriended is still in this list and shows as muted.

So why is this user still in the list. as the muted status is a connection between me and that friend, why are you still keeping this connection once the user has been unfriended?

If you unmute them then they will disappear from the list

This makes me think you are still keeping records of anyone I have ever have been friends with.

Hi @blim5001 !

Just wanted to let you know how this works. Muting is an action between two users, it has nothing to do with friendships. Therefore it exists outside of the friendship, and no, there isn’t any historical considerations here, it is a present-state function in that you have either muted another user or you haven’t.

Thanks for the question!

Thanks,

But afaik, unless I have missed something, you can only mute someone if they are your “Friend”

So if Plex knows that I have muted a particular user, (which they must do if it shows in the list as muted.) Then Plex knows that person must have been a friend at some point, at least until I unmute them after removing them as a “Friend”

I get that it could just be a setting between 2 users, but currently the only way to make that setting is through the friends section. So unless I unmute them, the data about muted users could be used to find users who have been friends in the past.

I was just a bit surprised to find users who I had unfriended still appearing in the list when clicking manage.

I almost dropped this into my first post, but there is an assumption here that I would like to correct.

That is not accurate. If you are on a page with someone that you are not friends with there is a 3-dot menu next to their name that can be used to mute or block them.

Thanks for the follow-up!

What is the purpose of muting someone you are not friends with?

ahh, I see…

Muting someone you are not friends with yet will prevent them from showing in the friend suggestions.

I suppose that sort of makes sense, as I had already posted elsewhere

that if I did have discover enabled it showed me random users I do not know. So I suppose I could mute them.
