and thinking about updating. Would an 1520+ / 22+ be a decent upgrade (if i can even find a 20)?
Its seems too be the easiest way with migration as you can just move the disks from old pos to the new and be more or less done.
thoughts?
This is a good reference I saw ChuckPa post
A bit dated but yeah. Weird so few of the Synology’s have software transcoding.
One thing missing from that docu is the range of Synology NAS that all have the same fault: (improper shutdowns event. leading to death, and the atom chip issue and resistor failure related to the power button)
S410, DS411, DS412, DS412+, DS413, DS414(J) DS414+, DS415, DS2415, DS416 Play, DS918+ DS920+, DS1511+, DS1515+, DS1812+, DS1813+ DS1815+, DS1817+, DS2415+, RS812, RS815+, RS2514+
I’m the maintainer of the NAS Compatibility Guide. I keep dropping off those things which aren’t strong enough to run PMS as well as add the new stuff which can.
It is a shame Synology doesn’t put bigger CPUs in but, for those who are a bit savvy, there is the Synology-sponsored “XPEnology” project (open DSM) on hardware of your choice.
If you were to build an i7 KabyLake or above CPU system and load DSM on it, PMS will run there just fine.
(I’m also the engineer who maintains the packing to keep PMS running on Synology)
