Running on a QNAP TS453A
From a MacBook Pro (2018)
Before it worked fine when changing files and folders in my music library.
I had a crash, my own fault, and reinstalled all and rebuild the complete libraries.
Now “automatic update library” will not work anymore.
I restarted the QNAP and Plex. I loaded the web player from the QNAP and from Plex.tv.
It just won’t work anymore.
Another thing that I found is that remote access will be possible at one moment and just stops without any reason and then will be possible again.
What can be wrong?
Can you provide the logs ZIP file please?
There are a bunch of things which could the cause but there’s no way to know without looking
Followup -
If you know how many directories you have (total) for media,
And that total is greater than 65536, you likely have run out of inotify slots.
(it happens a lot when music and photos are added due to how apps tend to store / download them)
Curating the media helps somewhat but the root problem is not having enough slots.
The transcoder will need at least 2 for any Dolby audio codec processing during playback transcoding.
The kernel parameter to increase is fs.inotify.max_user_watches.
Common value increases are in multiples of 32768 or 65536,
e.g. fs.inotify.max_user_watches=65536 -or- fs.inotify.max_user_watches=131072
care must be given to not use too many as this increases the memory footprint of the kernel . Small NAS boxes with limited memory can actually run out and ‘lock up’ the machine which will force a reload of QTS.
Extreme care should be used when less than 4 GB of memory is installed in any unit.
If 8GB or more is installed, any reasonable value up to 262144 makes sense in the vast majority of cases.
Best advice is to count (use FileStation) the total number of directories in use for all media then round up to the next multiple of 32768.
The system configuration file to manually edit is /etc/sysctl.conf.
I have been experiencing same issue with Nvidia Shield Server, mounted media from WDMyCloud does not trigger automatic partial scans but anything saved to the removable drives attached directly triggers automatic partial scans. I have tonnes of music on the WDMyCloud. How do the above apply to WDMyCloud, I’m assuming the commands need to be run from the NAS? Not particularly experienced with Linux.
I have 8Gb memory in my QNAP.
There are a lot of log files. How do I get them to you?
Make a ZIP file of the Logs directory
(Right-click ‘Logs’ → ‘Compress’)
I’ll give you a PM so you can attach them in the PM.
Chuck can I ask if this is an issue because of an old QTS?
On QTS-4.5.4 my inode capacity is much larger. I don’t have an autorun.sh to create an /etc/sysctl.conf at every boot.
$ sysctl -a | grep inotify
fs.inotify.max_queued_events = 16384
fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 128
fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 262144
user.max_inotify_instances = 128
user.max_inotify_watches = 262144
Thanks
Nibbles, where can I find this?
I used SSH in a Terminal on my Mac to log into the QNAP, then ran that command.
Some good info in Q13, Qnap faq.....read me first!
My session was basically:
$> ssh admin@192.168.1.42
<password entered>
$ sysctl -a
$ sysctl -a | grep inotify
$ exit
$>
plus / minus a typo ![]()
Big mistake number one: All my media is in the folder “Multimedia”
Q14: Where should I put my medias?
It’s not important, as long as you DO NOT use the default shares from QNAP, like “Multimedia” etc, since they also are used with some QNAP bundled applications, that creates files and directories, that confuse the Plex scanners. If you however decide to go with that directory, we urge you to look for hidden directories and files in it, and add an exclusion for those by using PlexIgnore functionallity.
Is the “PlexData” a good folder to put your movies and Music?
no PlexData is a convenience share, not used to run the server at all, put there to help us grab logs and putter around the database.
The usual plan is use the QNAP web admin to create several Shared Folders that will hold your media. I made one called Video, and one called Audio. I let the Shared Folders creation utility choose the location automatically. Doing that created two shared directories in my main pool named
/share/Video
/share/Audio
I then enabled SMB on the QNAP so I could mount those shares from my Mac.
At a terminal using SSH to the NAS, I used mkdir to add some organiziation
/share/Video/Film
/share/Video/4K
/share/Video/Home Movies
/share/Video/Brandnew
Then I set Plex to have one Library called Movies that points to /share/Video/Film
Plex has another Library called 4K Movies that points to /share/Video/4K.
Same sort of thing with Audio, there I have HiRes, Surround, and Stereo.
Now, tonight, out of the Blue, Plex started automatic scanning again!
Problem solved for me, for now?
Thank you all!
Maybe Plex could think about a way to get this out of the way?
