<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>
Have been looking in appdata local for the logs but nothing has been produced and the option is on.
The problem I noticed that new added files are not seen by the server and yet they are there in the folders where everything else is. Also two items I tried to start, I did not test further, were put there over a month ago, yet older material runs fine, although I did not test everything.
Does anybody has an idea where the problem may be?
Can you see the article for Server logs and post a copy of those zip file?
You got your server and web versions mixed. That version of pms is from March 2023 and the last for windows 7 and 8. There is no guarantee things will still work with this old version.
How funny you mention this because everytime I check for updates it says that it is up to date. So how am I to determine the right version if I can’t rely on those buttons that say [check for updates]???
I looked and only via the app I got a zip file…
Plex Media Server Logs_2025-07-22_09-47-19.zip (2.8 MB)
I am running PMS from my windows 2012 server, but I did not had the guts to upgrade it to 2019 server. This was a problem before, but not this kind of problem. So I hope there is a version for it, otherwise I have to remove it from that server and transport everything to my 2019 server, but I do not feel good about doing it, afraid I mess things up as I do not do these kind of things regularly…
So, I hope this problem can be patched…
Thanks people…
That is basically Windows 8 and thus, no longer supported by Plex.
Even if it’s windows 2012 R2, that doesn’t change much, since it is the equivalent of Windows 8.1 and therefore also no longer supported by Plex.
So technically, you are indeed up-to-date with Plex server. As in: you have the last version of Plex server which is able to run on Windows 8.
Unfortunately, it won’t. Because the old Plex server version that you are using won’t get patched in any way, except by way of releasing of a new Plex server version – which won’t run on your old Windows version.
With proper preparation and calm step-by-step action, you can do it too.

Don’t forget to export your Registry data, for a truly seamless migration. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201539237-backing-up-plex-media-server-data/
One question I have about this, before I zip and copy everything, can I also install simply a new server on the 2019 server and point to my media? The only thing is setting it up right, right? If I export the 2012 registry, I only need the PLEX-related entries and not the rest, so, if I would export that and import it to the 2019 server, would that work for the settings in PMS too?
I’m not that worried about a show or movie I have or haven’t seen, more about the different settings in PMS like subs, access to the outside etc…
Don’t zip. It destroys symbolic links and thus any manual poster selection is gone in the copy.
If you copy the plex data folder, do a direct file copy from volume to volume.
I prefer using robocopy on the command line, since it allows you to stop and restart the process (use the /MIR option).
If you cannot plug in the new hard drive into the older server (or vice versa), create a network file share and use that to copy.
Precisely. The linked article only talks about the Plex-related part of the registry.
So I ran into another question, looking into the registry I noticed two lines that point to a folder on the media volume. Now I see that it is rather up to date, but what can I do best with this folder?
ButlerDatabaseBackupPath"=“E:\Program Files\W2012\PLEX\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Databases”
and
“LocalAppDataPath”=“E:\Program Files\W2012\PLEX\”
Can I also simply copy this to the other server, because the media stays on that 2012 server and a networkdrive letter will then be assigned for Plex on the 2019 server…
Am I correct about this? or can I simply empty out these two lines in the registry?
The first mirrors what is set in Plex Web under
Settings - [server name] - ‘Show Advanced’ - Scheduled Tasks - “Backup directory”
The second is a direction for Plex Server to use the Plex data folder in this location, instead of the default on drive C:
Depending where the Plex data folder will be going live on the new machine, you should either remove or edit it accordingly.
So, I’ve installed and not yet started on the 2019 the PMS, by removing these two lines (the paths and not the whole line of course) it should be set via Plex in the settings?
“LocalAppDataPath” cannot be set in the user interface.
And it is crucial that it reflects the location, where you copied the plex data folder of the original server.
I hope you did the copy while both the source and the target Plex server software was disabled? Because if you did not, your database files may be damaged.
I did end both PMS and client before copy. I found one difference, on the 2012 server the registry was in HKEY_LOCAL_USER and on the 2019 it is (still not started it) in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE…
(Does this inflict the registry???)
I think I’m gonna copy the folder from those two paths too, to the 2019 server, as the volume number is the same.
Good or bad idea?
Ingore the stuff in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE… as it is put there either by the PMS installer exe or during the first startup.
Only edit/export/import HKEY_LOCAL_USER… Plex stuff.
And copying that folder? is that a good idea?
If you mean the plex data folder, copying it is essential to bringing your old server’s metadata, libraries, and all the little things you took care of over to the new installation.
Pretty much nothing is stored elsewhere, like in your Plex account.
Did you follow the very first link above I gave you? If not, do it. It has the most important stuff in it.
This is what I mean, the whole database, a few gigabytes are already copied…
(I’d change that W2012 into W2019)
Don’t mix the program installation folder and the Plex data folder. I hope you did not tell the installer to put all the program files into that same location.
