I have to admit, i considered switching to emby only because they offer a ‘trailers’ menu item, which is hugely important to me and the people I invite to my plex server.
I mean they love it and I love plex, but a huge let down and feature lacking from the experience is trailers.
We need tv trailers and we need an independent trailers menu item if not trailers injected pretty much everywhere(like netflix). Right now you can click an unnoticeable trailers button at the top of ‘some’ movies to play a trailer for that movie, but really my users don’t even know it exists.
A huge part of what someone does when using a streaming service is figuring out what they want to watch, and i’m surprised to say the least that more thought hasn’t been put into the trailer experience.
I see trailers as an available option on most of my titles.
What I wish is it was more controllable by the user. Like I can add trailers to a movie listing as extras, but I can’t change/remove the official “Trailer for the film” on the listing and replace it. The trailer that plays when you click the little film reel icon on the smart TV or choose “Play Trailer” on my Fire sticks is always Plex’s supplied trailer. And sometimes those trailers are poor quality (like formatted 4:3 for TV broadcast, low rez, not the official trailer but a trailer for a special edition or box set that has the movie, etc). Meanwhile, I’m ripping my BDs and I have the origial theatrical trailer in 1080p available.
Why can’t I deisgnate that as a trailer to play instead of Plex’s online ones (like by tagging it “-primarytrailer” at the end of the filename or something similar)?
From what I’ve observed, the main order of the extras is based on the order of your agents in settings e.g. if Local Media Assets is at the top, then the local trailers will come first.
The second level of sorting is alphabetical, so if you chose to move Local Media Assets to the top, and you had A-trailer.mkv and B-trailer.mkv, then A would be the primary trailer.
There’s some commonly repeated advice on this forum to move the Local Media Assets down to the bottom of the list of agents, but I’ve found there are also good reasons to have it further up. So I prefer to make sure the embedded metadata is correct* and keep it higher on the list.
@dannymichel, yes - my apologies. And I do agree with you that it would be a nice feature to have trailers more readily available if you wanted something new to watch.
