MyCloud Home Connection Issues

Server Version#: N/A
Player Version#: N/A

Hello! I’m fairly new to Plex and recently invested in a WD MyCloud Home to have smoother access to backed up photos, videos, and other media through my LG CX TV.

I set up the MyCloud Home and activated the Plex plugin through the MyCloud app. When I click on “configure” and login with my Plex account, I am taken to a never-ending loading page in my Plex account where I can never seem to confirm or proceed with anything.

I tried adding the local IP address through manual server settings, but still no luck.

Any suggestions? I’ve also checked in with WD support to see what they think

Thank you!

On the APPs tab, when you click on Plex, what’s the version installed? Does my cloud home allow you to install external apps? If yes, install the version from here

It looks like it’s running 1.18.6.2350. I don’t believe it allows any installations or updates from external sources.

I found this article, but I’m stuck at the “configure” step. I’m wondering if it’s a network problem more than anything.

You do see the Plex login screen and enter your login info, correct?

Then you get a blank page that never fully loads?

Some things to try:

  1. Hit refresh a couple of times (sounds goofy, but has worked when I’ve seen the same thing).

  2. Disable any ad-blockers, cookie blockers, etc or whitelist plex.direct and plex.tv domains. Plex sets/uses cookies. If they’re blocked, it can interfere with logins.

  3. Using a private/incognito browser window, point it directly at the WD’s IP address, http://wd_ip_address:32400/web (use the real IP address of the NAS). Also, note the connection is http, not https. You may see a message like “this application is not hosted at plex.tv…” That is OK. It just means you’re logging in directly to your system.

If this is for the LG, it cannot connect to the Plex server until the server is claimed and configured.

Everything you described is correct: login, then screen with rotating loading wheel that never advances. I will try those suggestions tonight after work and get back with you. Thanks for all the help!

Alright, I tried all of the suggestions with no luck. I’m definitely on the same network as the device. I can ping the device’s IP address from my desktop with no data loss or connection problems. I tried using a few different devices and web browsers as well. Still no luck - just rotating wheel that never proceeds to a final confirmation screen.

When I accessed the device’s IP address directly as recommended in the third suggestion, I was able to connect, but Plex recognized that I hadn’t authorized the server yet and I got the “No soup for you” notification.

Not sure really where to go from here. I haven’t heard back from WD yet about any recommendations.

And it looks like WD hasn’t updated their built-in Plex app for MyCloud Home since February of 2020.

Bumping in case anyone else has any ideas. Still haven’t heard from WD.

I’ll install Plex on my NAS today to test. Mine is a ex2 ultra though

No problem on my side

I’m considering returning the MyCloud Home and getting a MyCloud Ex2 Ultra. Seems that WD just can’t keep internal app support updated in a timely fashion with the MyCloud Home.

They replied to my support request with very generic troubleshooting and pointing the blame to Plex. It may be a problem with the Plex app version, but it’s on them to update it.

Do you have a combination of MyCloud Ex2 and drives that you used with your setup? I’m looking at about 4TB for now.

Thanks!

Honestly? Go for Synology. Their community is way more active and the devs are closer to the users too. Get yourself a unit with docker support.

Plex ninjas have a list of supported NAS that would you help making a better choice.

If you go with a Synology, get one with an Intel Celeron CPU. That will let you use hardware accelerated transcoding if you have to transcode video for some reason. Models with the Celeron processor also support Docker.

Definitely check the spreadsheet if you buy an older model (ebay, etc). Some of those models have Celeron CPUs but do not support hardware acceleration. Also make sure the unit runs DSM 7 (Synology’s Linux based OS). DSM 7 was released last year and some older models are not supported. The DSM 7 Release Notes list the supported models.

Look at the Google Docs spreadsheet linked in the NAS Compatibility List. It lists the CPU in each model, whether it supports hardware acceleration, etc.
