Naming the Hunger Games: Mockingjay movies

My server is my personal computer, which is connected wirelessly to my router… snip

Hmmmmm - bad idea.

The box with Plex on it really, really needs to be wired - really.
I have wireless clients/devices, but - the server is wired.

I’ve had it this way for at least a year with no issues at home. My wife recently streamed two seasons of Modern Family in full 1080p without a single hiccup or stutter, back to back over the course of a week. Every library issue I’ve had except for this was solved by changing file names or a single Plex Dance in one case. The only issue I’ve ever had was streaming outside the home, and that boils down more to Spectrum offering attrocious upload speeds.

@OttoKerner I’ll play around with the Defender settings and let you know how it plays out.

Still no luck even after telling Defender to ignore the Plex folder. I’m gonna wait a few minutes before grabbing new log files. Really lost at this point for what to do, short of just biting the bullet and doing a split on the listing.

EDIT: Logs posted. @OttoKerner Any thoughts on the new logs?

EDIT 2: And now I’m pretty sure I’ve done basically everything I can…my movies generally aren’t in their own folders within my “Movies” folder, but I made an exception and put each of these in their own folders, with the file names copied and pasted so the files and folders would match 100%. Still combining the movies into one listing.

Welp…

Apologies for not trying this sooner - as I already watched (fast forwarded through most of) those turkeys and deleted them long ago, and at that time they did work properly…

Now, however - they don’t work properly:

Yep - busted!

Used exact names as above:
The Hunger Games Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014).xxx
The Hunger Games Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015).xxx

BUT!

Never to be outsmarted (or kicked around) by Plex… I used my advanced powers as a contributing member at TMDB and checked out the ‘Alternate Names’ for these guys and came up with:

The Hunger Games 3 Mockingjay Part 1 (2014).xxx
The Hunger Games 4 Mockingjay Part 2 (2015).xxx

Did the old Plex Dance and that resulted in (drum roll, please):

Yes!

Aha! Thank you Juice. That finally did the trick.

This caught my eye. If you want to try to avoid problems in the future; you definitely want each movie in it’s own folder that’s named the same as your file. Otherwise, you’ll be back here soon wondering what happened to all your movies.

I’ve done it without folders since the start with no problems other than occasional metadata issues, with roughly 300 movies, and the folders didn’t even help in this situation. So really, what would I even have to worry about happening at this point?

Using subfolders per movie is sometimes the last resort to improve matching.
.nfo file trick

They’re also a good way to improve speed of library browsing, particularly if you use local assets like posters and external subtitles.

I should have checked the naming of these files myself on day one because I KNOW what happens when you ASS|U|ME - for that I am sorry. I have had to employ the ‘Alternate Movie Title’ option on a few occasions, so this is just another one of ‘those occasions’. I know these particular movies once behaved correctly with the standard name given to them in TMDB’s database, but now, for some reason, they do not. I should not be surprised by this - Plex has, after all, completely screwed the Pooch when dealing with TVDB for Shows that have successors - why not screw that Pooch at TMDB as well? Beware Pooches - you’re on Plex’s target list!

As I have said on many occasions and will continue to say:

I will use sub-folders for all my movies when HELL forms an ice cap 500 miles thick.

I use subtitle files - no issues.
I use local artwork - no issues.
I have used nfo files, but no longer need them - no issues
My ‘smaller’ and more abundant libraries scan quickly so there is no need to re-invent that wheel:

This is a very small library. I do have libraries with more than 300 items and have no issues with scanning speed - the entire 26 Library Plexiverse housed on multiple ‘spinning rust’ drives is scanned in under 35 seconds making me the owner of a perfectly round wheel with no overabundance of unwanted and un-needed sub-folders.

I do use them when required - for Movie Extras. That’s it.

Thank you I need to try that as well as I just spent 30 min trying to fix this as well. Gave up and googles and found this thread yay

Instead of ‘Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’, use ‘01’ and ‘02’ at the end of each file. They will then split apart and you can fix the match.

I tried several iterations and kept hitting the same issue. But I finally landed on the exact file names to get a perfect hit on both files:

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay.mp4
The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2.mp4

It’s a simple flaw in logic that we don’t recognize consciously but would easily confuse a computer. We all know that there’s The Hunger Games and it has 3 sequels.

The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

We implicitly know that if one of the movies is Part 2, then the first should be referred to as Part 1. But computers don’t do implicit and (logically speaking), that makes including Part 1 in the file name redundant. That’s why it can’t find the proper match.

And just for the record: There’s too many responses that I’m unwilling to sift through so if someone else has already offered up this solution, sorry for the re-post.
