Missing Movies from Library

Server Version#:PlexMediaServer-1.18.4.2171-ac2afe5f8-x8
Player Version#:2.12 (AppleTV)
I’ve recently acquired all of the various Star Wars movies, and added them to my Synology Plex server. The movies are named:

  • Star Wars - I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Star Wars - II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • Star Wars - III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  • Star Wars - VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)

Unfortunately, when I go to view them only a few of them show up in my Library when I view All Movies by Title. Those that do show up are the following, and their titles are displayed as “Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones”, “Star Wars”, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, which is not as they are on disk.

I’m also missing “Solo - A Star Wars Story (2018)” though I see it on the disk, but not in my Library.

All of my 848 movies are stored in:
/Media → /Movies - > Movie Content

Is there an issue with the way that I’ve named the movies? Perhaps Plex doesn’t like or understand the hyphen “-”?

You’re likely to be more successful if you adhere to the file naming convention for Plex.

If I may augment with an example which complies with the naming convention (using FileBot , which is an invaluable tool):

Star Trek Beyond (2016)/
  Star Trek Beyond (2016).mkv

Star Wars The Force Awakens (2015)/
Star Wars The Force Awakens (2015).mkv

Star Wars The Last Jedi (2017)/
Star Wars The Last Jedi (2017).mkv

Yep, I’m intimately familiar with that document, and with the exception of the hyphen, the movies are named appropriately.

But do notice that hyphens are a perfectly acceptable character, as in:

The Dark Knight (2008) - pt1.mp4
The Dark Knight (2008) - pt2.mp4

They are indeed acceptable for multi-part when merging.

Notice the hyphen is after the enclosed (date) not before. This could be the problem.

The next question is:

Based on how the files were added, does user plex have permission to read them?
Sometimes, copying over SMB/CIFS does not grant the appropriate permission.

@ChuckPa
Yep, I run all of the movies through FileBot before copying them over.

Are you suggesting that I put each movie into its own folder, or simply remove the hyphens as in your example?

I suggest both:

  1. Punctuation, inappropriate used, can easily result in failed matching.
  2. Placing each in their own directory affords you the option of adding extras to it and having those extras properly associate with the film (Local Media Assets agent)

My naming convention is:

/nas/movies/{n} ({y})/{n} ({y})

The work is done on the computer.
When FileBot does the renaming, the proper structure and names are done the first time as they are transferred to the QNAP ( NFS)

@ChuckPa
Yep, they’re all in the same movie folder, which Plex has the correct permissions for. I’ve added other movies more recently than the Star Wars movies, and I see and can play those.

This is where Linux often confuses.

Your username and Plex’s username (plex) are held distinct by Linux.
Just because you can see and play them doesn’t mean Plex can.

Can you, using File Station,

  1. right click on one of them
  2. click Properties
  3. click the Permissions tab.

Is username ‘Plex’ listed with “Read” or “R/W” permission?

@ChuckPa,
Filebot is doing the same thing for me, with the naming convention for the most part.

Here is how FileBot named the movies.

Did you rename them in-situ or have you moved them out and back in (the plex dance) ?

My example is how FileBot named them originally.

I renamed them manually locally, before moving them to Plex. They have not been renamed or moved on PMS.

what does DSM show you?

Does it look like this? (example is the highlighted movie)

Individual movies have these permissions:

While the Parent folder (Movies) has these permissions:

Thanks. That’s the main step on any Linux machine.

Now, would you please do the following:

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
    a. Verify DEBUG logging on
    b. Verify VERBOSE logging off
  2. Scan Files on that library section
  3. When it finishes, Refresh all metadata on that same section
  4. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs

Everything which is matched should just flip/flip of the posters.
It’s a fairly quick process.

@ChuckPa - It’s running, but it’s not going to be a quick process. Never is.

That’s fine. I don’t mind. I will be up for a few hours.
The logs will provide me the information I need to help you resolve this.
