NAS use of Hardware

Hi -

I am looking at both QNAP and Synology NAS’s for running Plex and found the following on this page - https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/

Currently, NAS devices are not formally supported for Hardware-Accelerated Streaming. However, a few high-end NAS devices run 64-bit Linux and come with Intel processors that are capable of Quick Sync Video. Those devices may support Hardware-Accelerated Steaming when enabled.

However the Plex NAS Compatibility list shows hardware accelerated transcoding support

Which is correct?
Thanks
-Bill

Bill,
Please provide specific details. I am the maintainer of the NAS compatibility list as well as support both Synology and QNAP.

You should also be advised, HW accelerated transcoding is a Plex Pass enabled feature. Your account does not show an active PlexPass.

Hi Chuck -

Thanks for the reply. I have not purchased my NAS or Plex Pass yet - I am trying to figure out which NAS to get. In my research I found the two statements which appear to contradict each other.

On https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/ it says that hardware accelerated streaming is not supported on NAS devices. However the spreadsheet lists Hardware accelerated transcoding on NAS devices.

Do those statements contradict each other? If so which is right?

Thanks
-Bill

Bill,
The statements there DO contradict . I am writing that up immediately . Thank you for catching it.

The NAS Compatibility Guide is the authority. I am, in a word, “retentive” about it being current.

Thanks for your help

You definitely got the right person for keeping the list current Bill. Chuck is very particular about that. Which NAS models were you looking at?
