Need help with setting up plex remote access

I’ve been successfully running plex for over a year with an external forwarded port. About a week ago my remote access suddenly stopped working. I have tried the following to no avail:

rebooted server
rebooted router
changed IP
changed forwarded port
reset firewall states
built new plex system on new IP with same and different port

UPNP is working as I see the random ports get mapped on my pfsense. I also was able to successfully telnet to the external port and get a response from the plex server.

The only thing that changed around the time of the issue starting was I finally converted to plex pass vs. a free account so my fiancee would stop using upload and download when she was in the house watching our local plex server.

I’ve looked through the logs and this seems to be an issue with the data being sent/received to the Myplex and pubsub servers from what I can tell.

The plex media server is a headless ubuntu 14.04

This is what I get:

so i’m paying $5 a month and no one is able to even make a comment asking for logs in almost a week?

My systems worked fine and then suddenly didn’t. I’m okay with waiting so long as someone at plex is working on this. If this isn’t a known issue, then I would like to know how I can fix it.

bump, anyone from PLex, feel free to chime in and help…anytime now would be great

The only thing i can think of with something like this is to check your firewall and router ports. Also maybe try logging out of the server and back in?

tried both numerous times and no dice. I can telnet so I know the firewall and port are happy.

What happens when you uncheck manually specify a port?

it opens a port via upnp but still fails to turn green for remote access

Have you used canyousrmeeme.org on your server to see if the port you are manually using can be seen?

Couple of things, here… First, you don’t specify what OS you are running PMS on. Nor what type of router you have. And whether you have looked through the troubleshooting support document for remote access.

Best place to start is right here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138-Troubleshooting-Remote-Access

Pay particular attention to the manual port forwards section towards the bottom. This is going to mean you log into the router’s web app and specify the IP your PMS is on, and the port you wish forwarded to PMS’s 32400 inside the network. Setting up a manually forwarded port is bullet proof in most cases. The rare instances this has NOT worked, are usually due to a double NAT situation way out of your control. (Apartment, dorm or bunkhouse provided internet.)

Relying on uPnP is, well, buggy at best, and outright a no go at worst case. The fact that it DID work for so long for you is truly flukish, IME. The way this works is, the router opens ports up as applications request them. BUT many implementations different router manufacturers use, the router drops those uPnP ports after a set time frame. (usually 5-15 minutes.) This is to clear up the router’s memory. It’s a setting most manufacturers don’t provide access to. They think they know best how to use the router…

After opening a port in the router’s web app, go to canyouseeme.org and check that the IP listed there is the same as what the router has listed on it’s landing page, or remote connections/WAN page. If so, then test the port you have forwarded. Assuming the IP is right, everything should work from here forward. PM if you have problems.

Mike, while I appreciate the help, all of your questions have answers in my first post. The only one that does is the fact that my router is a pfsense installation.

If you have any further troubleshooting it would be much appreciated.

I tried the open port check and the port is open, yet still no joy from plex.

OK, so you manually specified ports on your router?

Your PMS machine has a static IP on the LAN?

The port you are trying to get to via canyouseeme.org is the same port you have forwarded to port 32400 inside the network as per the instructions in the support document? (WAN side ##### : LAN side 32400)

If you forwarded say 45524 outside to 45524 inside that won’t work. Plex is listening only on 32400 or 32401 even if you have it check marked to use another port in the settings.
