Netflix - Monsters Metadata Incorrect

So this has ALREADY come up before, but apparently the thread got closed due to inactivity. and its still not fixed… DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story -- multiple tmdb ids

However, with the recent addition of the third season/series (depending on perspective) in this saga, I felt it was worth bringing it up again.

The issue is simple… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster\_(American_TV_series) is an anthology series. Each season has no relation to the previous.

On Netflix, they are shown as separate shows…

  1. https://www.netflix.com/nl-en/title/81287562 (Dahmner)
  2. Watch Monsters | Netflix Official Site (Menendez Brothers)
  3. Watch Monster: The Ed Gein Story | Netflix Official Site (Ed Gein)

On TMDB they are shows as separate shows…

  1. DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (TV Series 2022-2022) — The Movie Database (TMDB)
  2. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (TV Series 2024-2024) — The Movie Database (TMDB)
  3. Monster: The Ed Gein Story (TV Series 2025-2025) — The Movie Database (TMDB)

In Plex, when you put all three in separate folders, it will merge the first and second season/shows into one series. With only one season called ‘miniseries’. And the third entry will be shown as separate series.

If you use the split apart option, and then try to match the metadata to the second season/show (The Lyle and Erik Mendez Story), plex only finds the metadata for Dahmer and there is no way to indicate the second listed item.

If you put them all in the same folder, with numbering such as S02 and S03, plex doesnt pick up any metadata information for the second and third seasons either.

In short, there is no way to correctly identify metadata for the second season/series. And I as a user would expect that it should be treated like the third entry in this list. A separate show as it has completely separate casting.

Regards,

Plex does not support tmdb episode ordering for this show. You have to use tvdb episode ordering which combines the multiple shows into one Monster (2022) - TheTVDB.com. Just search the forum and you will find many folks complaining about it but plex just won’t do anything about it.

What you say doesnt match what i am observing though. If what you say was the case then the third season/show wouldnt match metadata and show as an entire different series.

I dont care what service they use, tvdb or tmdb… or if they show as 3 seasons of one show or 3 separate shows….

But as neither way works (as seperate series or as seasons within a series), its obviously more complicated than that. I indicated that I had tried that particular method in my original post…”If you put them all in the same folder, with numbering such as S02 and S03, plex doesnt pick up any metadata information for the second and third seasons either.”

By default, all Libraries you make use TMDB numbering for shows. However, Plex has not fixed the “TMDB” ordering, so the default messes up so much. Edit [ :pencil:] your show and go to Advanced, and change Episode ordering from Library Default to TheTVDB (Aired). It should work as dokuro says then, with them all as one series.

[Edit] Ah, you might first have to choose “Merge” on the two shows if it lists S3 as a separate show…

I don’t have this show myself, but based on the description of what it is, I’d MUCH prefer that each season was a separate show instead of combined. I wish Plex’d fix the metadata so that at least TMDB-default libraries have no issues with this show.

PERFECT, THIS, THANK YOU!

Like I said …

Plex does not use any particular service, they consolidate metadata from multiple sources into a single metadata and then you can order that metadata based on episode ordering. In the case of this show you can ONLY use tvdb episode ordering as plex are unwilling to fix their back-end with how tmdb order it.
