Network too slow on Apple TV 4K

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571
Player Version#: 2.15

Dear Plex community, this is my first post so I apologise beforehand if I am breaking any community rules.

I have a strange problem on my Apple TV 4k. When I want to watch a certain movie on it with the Plex client, after a minute or so I get a warning that my network is too slow to play the file. However the stream is only 24 Mbps and my wireless network is supposed to be 100 Mbps at max. Enough I should say.

Strangely when I play the same movie with Infuse 6.3.1, linked to the Plex server, the file plays with no problems. This is still a 1080 movie, but I noticed the same problem (and “solution”) when playing 4K content.

Here are two screenshots (Plex.png and Infuse.png) of the Plex server dashboard while streaming to both clients (not simultaneously).

Ideas about what could be the problem?

Thanks a lot in advance,
François

Plex Infuse

Well wireless… Hard to say if the speed of it is enough. Maybe Infuse and the Plex app fill the buffer differently and that is why infuse has no issues.

If you say 100 Mbps at max this doesn’t mean that you get that in reality, it is often much less than that. E.g. I am sitting more or less next to my router, it tells me my phone is getting a gross bandwidth of 650 Mbit down, in reality I am getting a net bandwidth of 280 Mbit.

Hi Coxeroni, thanks for the quick reply.

It must be the way Infuse fills the buffer then. My wifi router is not particularly speedy or powerful but I can reproduce this behaviour with high repeatability. So even though my wifi network is not the fastest, obviously it is fast enough for infuse. I had the same behaviour with a 4K file at 80 Mbps. No playback problem with Infuse, immediate buffering with Plex even though the video and audio are in Direct Play mode.

That said, maybe Plex will have less problems if I were to upgrade to faster, more powerful wifi router like a TP-link C2300 e.g.

Thanks again,
François

Hard to tell, wire is always better. But a more beefy wireless setup might give you more reserve. Also a powerline adapter can help if you can’t use an ethernet cable.
