Apple TV 4K - network issues with high bandwidth video files

Hello everybody,

My setup :

  • Plex media server 1.18.5.2260 on Windows server 2019, Intel Skull Canyon with 32GB RAM, metadata on SSD, videos on regular HDD in RAID 5
  • Apple TV 4K with Plex Media PLayer 2.12 (14020)
  • Windows 10 with Plex Media Player 3.104.2 on Intel Hades Canyon
  • A 1Gb/s ethernet network connecting the three devices above

My File :
A movie in 4K HEVC + DTS at 48.2 Mb/s

My problem :

  • When I direct-play (without transcoding) the file on Plex on Windows, network remains at a sufficient speed and no problem is seen on screen.
  • When I direct-play (without transcoding) the file on Plex on Apple TV, after 10-15 minutes of perfect picture and sound, Plex starts buffering and I can see a huge drop in network speed.

Anyone else experiencing low network speed on Apple TV while streaming from Plex, when speedtest.net shows 890 Mbps?

Thanks in advance

I am experiencing the same problem. Latest PMS (released a few days ago) on Windows Server 2019. AppleTV 4K running latest Plex app (released yesterday).

If I have the enhanced video player turned on, a 1080p file will direct play fine for a few minutes then begin stuttering every few seconds. The transmit network speed on the server drops to a constant 2.5 Mbps.

If I have the enhanced video player turned off, the same file will direct steam without issue for the entire duration. The transmit speed on the server is well above 2.5 Mbps.

I will attempt to reproduce and upload logs in the next few days.

its not a network issue, its a problem with the enhanced player

it also happens on ios mobile (not just tvos).

Reproduced the issue. See Enhanced video player will eventually start stuttering
