New computer - copy Plex Media Server "data" directory

Server Version#:1.19.3.2764
Player Version#:

I am a total newbie at this, and hope I have the right section.

I have a new computer and instructions say to copy the Plex Media Server “data” directory from the old computer to the new computer. The old computer has folders in that directory that do not exist on the new computer. Do I copy EVERYTHING over regardless of whether those folders exist on the new computer?

Thank you in advance.

See support article below for specific steps. In the process of moving to the new computer, you will delete any data on the new computer and replace it with data from the old computer.

Those are the instructions I have been following, but it does not answer my question.

The old computer has folders that the new computer does not:

Diagnostics - empty
Updates - lots of files in here

I was wondering if those need to be transferred.

Thanks again.

Yes. You can skip cache files, as mentioned in the support document.

FYI, the Updates folder contains installers for prior versions of Plex. You don’t have to copy it. However, it does not take up much space and can come in handy if you need to fall back to a prior release for some reason (unstable beta release, work around a bug, testing, etc).

Plex.tv/download only gives you the current releases. Maybe keep the last couple of releases, in case you’re running beta/Plex Pass releases and need a fallback.
