Will the new “Downloads” require an active Plexpass subscription for every user wanting to use it, regardless, whether the Server has an active subscription?
As far as i understood, “old” user accounts, who are used to “sync” being included aren’t required to get a Plexpass to use “sync”. Will this still be true for the new “Downloads” feature or will everybody need to have an active subscription?
That seems to be the endgame.
Apparently there’s going to be some kind of a grace period during that existing shares w/ allow-sync enabled will remain active, even if only the server admin has a Plex Pass. In the mid/long term this will go away and the user who wants to download needs an active Plex Pass (no specific date set at this time).
I don’t know. The article reads like members of a Plex Home (members of your household) should be able to use sync/download if the Home admin has a Plex Pass. I’m not exactly sure if that only applies to managed users or also regular accounts that are member of a home.
“If the admin of a Plex Home has an active Plex Pass subscription, then the members of the Plex Home that physically live together can use the Download/Sync functionality from the main Plex Media Server (if enabled for each share).”
How on earth can Plex determine whether someone lives in the same home or not?
The only “syncing” I do is for my own devices or my 11 year old’s devices if we go on a road trip or something. I am not clear how this works though under “Downloads” compared to “Mobile Sync”. What happens with “optimized” under this paradigm? I thought to “optimize” something was to get it ready for a mobile sync ahead of time.
I do give a couple people (Mom out of state, mother in law) access to certain shares on my server, but nobody else has sync/download capability. After reading that article I’m not clear whether I can continue to put movies on my son’s fire tablet anymore or not! It worked last week! lol
Mobile sync and optimizing videos are not actually linked/related.
The way I read it, your 11-year-old should be ok while he’s a managed user under your Plex account (with a Plex Pass). The way I read the article, your son should also be ok while he’s a member of your Plex Home (while you as the admin of that Plex Home have a Plex Pass). However I’m a bit cautious because I’ve stumbled with the same part of the article you have. I can only guess if this is left vague on purpose or by accident; I’ll ask but cannot make any promises as for the article being updated soon or only once the “future mode” is set.
