Disabling those was one of the first things i did when they first appeared last year..
Unfortunately, I was struck with the new experience version on my NVIDIA Shield TV Pro today.
As I couldn’t find a changelog, I read the one provided in the Play Store.
Reading things like faster scrolling performance made me excited.
Then I saw this… horrible WIP mess. ![]()
I’ve opted-out of the Beta now to at least have a usable version, because this new update made it unusable for me.
For the love of god, please improve your Quality Assurance! Those issues could have been found within 5mins of using the app. Lack of QA in the past made me disable auto updates on a device for the first time. (looking at you SyncState bringing crashes every hour)
What I’ve noticed:
- Abysmal performance. Even the splash screen is stuttering. Rendering takes ages, loading data even longer which then comes with slow rendering again. (Player + Server are on the same device, so latency is definitely not an issue)
- Horrendous navigation UX
- Homescreen feels more cluttered due to bigger preview area
- Navigating to the top bar selects an invisible/phantom element, so you have to double tap that up button on your remote
- Selecting a library takes much more user input now instead of having a nice sidebar
- “Recommended” still being the first and can’t be changed. I want my stupid library and not an empty page because Recommended won’t show me anything
- Player menu made more complicated. Instead of having a button to change Audio and Subtitles I now have to navigate through more layers?!
- Missing features
- Theme music! I. Use. It. (even though I might be a minority… also why would I extract a truck load of mp3 files from my shows?!)
- Crashes. Old version had some sporadic crashes when things started lagging after a while. This one even crashed within the first minutes of usage, due to abysmal performance.
Might not be much feedback, but I didn’t want to use that pile of something any longer.
As a software developer myself, having one codebase is an awesome thing and I totally understand your motivation behind it, but you never should have released it in that state.
Also please make the product owner actually use the software before letting them make decisions like unleashing it to the general users.
Really. Has it started rolling out on TV devices?
Both my Shield TV and my Pixel phone had a Beta update available today.
Don’t know how it is for other TVs (like LG WebOS), but the Shield definitely got one.
Came together with the server update… at least the server is working fine so far. ![]()
Thanks for the warning …
Yes I got it on Shield. The beta was updated not the public version. Stated in a different thread but can’t access player controls on any media. Only pause and play works with button on remote. I uninstalled and opted out of beta to get working app back until all TV app bugs are worked out.
Wonders if this is the latest mistake from plex as there is no announcement from them on TV being updated …
Can you please hire a decent project manager! This whole new experience rollout has been a massive cluster ■■■■. My nevida Sheild’s just updated to the new experience. It’s as buggy, if not worse than the mobile app. Why do you insist on releasing an app that isn’t ready? You’re just damaging your brand!
Per my post above Discover Source needs to be set to “Disabled.” “Disabled for Managed Accounts” still leaves it enabled for the admin user. After changing it, close and restart the app for the change to take effect.
You’ll know you’ve done it correctly when “Discover” is no longer in the nav bar and its hubs are removed from the home screen.
@drzoidberg33 or perhaps @Atomatth ; i have asked a couple but got no answer; do you have any updates regarding the support for more languages?
Thank you.
An update to the Android TV beta update was mistakenly released today that included the New Experience.
A fix has been released. For anyone who has the beta Android TV app installed and was updated to the New Experience, you will need to uninstall the app and reinstall it to roll back to the old app.
Gotchya, i thought it worked reverse, i.e., disabled just kills it on my account while disabling for managed users kills it on everyones (mine included..)
My mistake, thank you!
No problem, hopefully it makes navigating a little better for you!
Anyone else’s iPad running super hot? Played a show on my iPad for about 40 minutes- my iPad was insanely hot to the touch and the battery was draining very fast. Lost bout 45% in an hour.
Yeah, it happened to me too trying to play a few movies. One of the many reasons why I’m not currently using the app at all.
The iPad version of the app isn’t in a great spot right now.
I also have this problem with TrueHD audio tracks, but nobody seems to want to even acknowledge the issue or the simple questions I have about it ![]()
The whole thing is such a mess. It doesn’t fill me with confidence about the future of the video player apps.
Please fix the black color in the navigation bar on the iPad app. Didn’t notice this until now and I can’t unsee it.
Just coming here to add my dissatisfaction with the new app. Literally everything about it besides the new UI sucks. And the UI/UX is not great either. App is slow, missing features, and worse of all - confusing navigation. Finding my shows takes so many clicks, no remembered tabs, forced discovery.
This “upgrade” is really just a major downgrade for users.
Long: We never really had the greatest amount translations or language support before
. Our previous mobile app would just use the system language or fallback if the language wasn’t supported. A lot of these languages had relatively few translations so a large number of strings were still in English. For the languages listed in the New Experience we decided to consolidate on a smaller list of the higher priority languages with the highest amount of translations. Not terrible but not great.
Short: Yes, support for additional languages is something that we’d like to do.
This is an insult to the users who previously contributed translations on Transifex for Plex. Many languages were basically fully translated or mostly translated in the previous Plex app, but the new app didn’t inherit these translations, and that is terrible.
In addition, I once asked about matters related to translations on the forum. For example, many incorrect translations in the Chinese version were locked and couldn’t be revised, and so on. However, I didn’t receive any replies. It seems that you don’t care much about multilingual support.
I also want to ask whether the translations for the new version are still contributed by users on Transifex. Which translation project is for the new version of the APP? I haven’t seen any indication in that project clearly stating that it is for use in the new version of the APP. Among the existing translations, many languages that show as already available cannot be selected in the new version of the APP.
