New Experience Public Release Feedback

The new app (Android) is horrendous.

The design itself isn’t bad, in fact I kind of like a lot of the new design, however that’s not the issue.

Since this new “experience” update went live it has

  • Removed Play Next queue from the app: Can no longer select a bunch of media and create a quick play queue.

  • Skip Intros & Skip Credits no longer works.

  • Sleep protection no longer works.

  • Casting functionality hardly works: I connect to my Chromecast, but media won’t actually play. I have to force close the app, open it back up, then it will actually cast the selected media… sometimes. Other times it won’t do it at all. It’s a coin toss.

  • Casting functionality issues continued: The app will “disconnect” from my Chromecast after the phone has been idle for a minute or two. So if I need to control my media, I cannot. I have to open the app, “reconnect” to the Chromecast, then I’ll have my media controls back.

  • Subtitles are borked now.

  • Skip forward and backwards is also borked now.

  • Relay no longer works now.

  • Re-adding all the ad infused Plex playlists again despite having removed then already (twice before) and making it so the old way of doing this no longer works. Instead burying the settings to clean Home Page up hidden inside each Library settings server side now. I miss the days when you could do this client side.

Those are just what I’ve personally encountered. Looks like there’s a mountain of more issues others have been dealing with.

This app is borderline useless currently (especially for those who cast their media and or like to throw together a quick play queue). This “experience” update is more akin to a half built pre alpha release than an actual app that functions.

I’ve seen you guys mess up a few times in the 12 years I’ve been using this service as a Lifetime Pass holder, bugs happen, it’s normal. But this… what the hell even is this?

You guys pushed a new app that looks nice, however not actually working with tons of broken and removed features.

The radio silence is deafening too.

This has worked well for folks: https://forums.plex.tv/t/downgrade-to-old-ios-version-and-turn-off-updates-only-for-plex-howto-no-jailbreak-required/

hola yo tambien me siento decepcionado tengo colecciones con su tema musical de fondo pero en el app movil no se escuchan

Hey, iOS user here, after the last update I can’t control video playback using keyboard on iPad. Space for pause/play and arrows for skipping. It used to work before this update, now it doesn’t. Would love it to return

Should be back in the next release for iOS.

I just want to add my voice to the tsunami of hate. I’ve had to revert to an earlier version to be able to use Plex on my Android devices.

The Plex New Experience reminds me of the New Coke fiasco of the mid-eighties: a company so arrogant and out-of-touch with its clients that it forces upon them an unwanted and unnecessary change, resulting in a brutal backlash and an unprecedented fall from grace.

I have difficulty comprehending how an enterprise that has so far shown a healthy respect for its users can jump off a cliff like this, substituting a perfectly-working and well-loved app for a brick. I haven’t been able to watch anything, not one single episode/movie, with the New Experience.

A few weeks ago I would have put Plex in the top ten of my favourite apps without hesitation. Today I’m seriously considering moving to the competition.

Whoever approved the launch should lose their job forthwith.

I agree, Denny. I never joined these forums until they told us ‘watch together’ was going away, so I made an account and came to vote to keep it in, knowing it is pointless for me to even try to make my case.

Then this new update drops and it’s confirmed, they really do not care about the power users who have supported them all these years. It’s all about the untapped growth in people who want to stream ad-supported slop for free. Those users do not rely on the robust set of features we have all come to love, so the Plex dictators in charge are killing said features just so they can do less work in their day-to-day.

And as soon as you come here to express displeasure, the gaslighting ratchets up and the humiliation ensues. “How could you possibly use the product like that” and other such comments are just insane to see coming from the employees.

And THIS right here is EXACTLY why diving into the FAST TV and VOD space will and has gotten so much more saturated. I love being blunt and direct so, I’m here to tell Plex Inc. that their gamble is a very high risk considering all the other platforms have the very same, if not better diversity in media. PLUTO TV is by far better at the FAST TV and VOD space, being acquired by Paramount turned out to be VERY successful since, solving the ever-annoying adverts randomly being inserted in the most inconvenient timing. It was something I was initially concerned about, but Paramount did better than expected with PLUTO.

To add insult to injury with Plex’s self-sabotage, ROKU just acquired Frndly, a competitor to Philo and other cost saving cable alternatives. THAT really should have been PLEX Inc. move if they really wanted to build more leverage for themselves.

The idiocy of what’s been going on the past 5 years is dumbfounding. The wall-garden, self-appointed, deletion of Advanced user granularity from their apps over the years has started to deprive its community and they only have themselves to blame.

You’re right man. The thing is, Plex investors need to sell the company to make any money out of this. All this money has been sunk into the company and the longer it takes them to sell it, the lower their IRR rate of return will be. Kleiner’s first check into the company was over 10 years ago so this investment is weighing their fund down; they need to sell Plex and fast.

Whoever buys plex is going to do the same stuff that Plex is doing to itself right now. Unfortunately that means that users like us will lose. Features will break, go away, and degrade as they strive for mass appeal.

It’s a shame, but for many, many of the OG diehards, we knew what this was going to come down to. It’s just sad to know it had to end on such a disastrous front knowing Plex already had experimented with the bottom navigation, and it too was a mess the first go around. One thing is for certain; they don’t intend to ever learn, nor do they plan to.

Huge shame indeed. I have had so much fun over the last 5 years maintaining a plex home for my nuclear family. It’s been an awesome hobby and brought a lot of joy to me. Now this nonsense happens, it’s just sad really.

It’s super annoying that I can not hide that Live TV garbage Plex keeps pushing.
Now even though I have an age restricted child profile set up it is of no use as my kids can just head over to Jerry Springer right away. Thanks Plex. Really appreciate that one.
Oh and it surely doesn’t help that my own libraries are “Not found” anymore in that regard.

Yeah it would be annoying if it were true. But it can be disabled by going to your account settings through Plex Web.

Also, HD channels are showing as no longer available in the android app.

Please guide me… I don’t see that setting where you mentioned it.

That was my setting. I thought the child profile was a managed account. Silly me…

Quit or Force Quit your Plex app, reopen and it should only display TWO options in the bottom bar. HOME and LIBRARIES
