I just wanted to let you know that there is a new application available for the iPhone, which supports to remotely control Plex.
It is called VooMote and as you might guess from my username, I am part of the team that developed this application. So, I hope it is ok that I post this here.
VooMote has a different approach than most of the other remote control apps in the AppStore. VooMote is gesture-based, so you just swipe with your fingers to browse the menus. You can control Plex, while watching at your screen, not at your iPhone.
Additionally you get support for a lot of other media applications that you might use on your mac, such as: Hulu, Boxee, Front Row, DVD Player.
We just added support for Plex and we are very curious how you like it. We are eager to get your feedback, what's good and what's to be improved.
Here is the link to the AppStore to get some more information: http://itunes.apple.com/app/voomote/id325938893?mt=8
The price of VooMote is $4,99.
This looks like a nice product. Does it handle each of the various applications independently (e.g., ability to select “program mode” for EyeTV versus going staight to “Movies” in Plex? If not, then that is a feature-set that is required for a universal-type remote.
Most important for Plex use is the ability to see and handle the Plex library. A Plex remote needs to see all the TV shows, Movies, and music present on the server in addition to being able to just control the Plex front-end. This is particularly important for music, such that we can see and control what’s playing (e.g., playlists, artists) without having to turn on the TV.
In short, it would work in two modes: by gestures which moves you around the Plex view on the TV (like a standard remote) and by push button by taking you within the plex library without changing the view on the screen (just like Apple iPhone Remote app in controlling the music or the XBMC Remote at controlling XBMC media–these are both ideal for what they do).
And yes, a “lite” version is a requirement with a $4.99 price tag. I’d be glad to pay $4.99 if all of the features I suggested worked.
I have to agree, I would need to be able to see if its usable from a personal preference point of view before spending $4.99.
I know $4.99 isn’t a lot, but when you compare app store prices, its up there in the higher pricing category!
If I end up using something daily, I don’t care about $4.99 but even with cheap apps, I have bought a fair few at the “no brainer” price bracket of $1 - $1.50 which I don’t use at all.
At the risk of this or any app for that matter falling into that “don’t use after a week” category, I won’t pay $4.99
This is interesting enough that I’m tracking this topic now. I wonder that from time to time Plex becomes unresponsive and you have no clue why until you look down and realize the iPhone screen is auto-locked. Can the app dely the app without effecting the delay in other apps? Since the idea to to have your eyes on the TV, not the phone, could it dim the phone screen to save battery?
I installed the iPhone App and the reciever. After starting the iPhone App you can only choose between “Help” and “Start”. Help is just one sentence that tells you to visit the homepage. Start freezes the App.
No settings to adjust anything anywhere.
I spend quite a lot of money on the AppStore and don´t mind a few bucks (if the Game or App just isn´t all that good). But when nothing works, that sucks. I´m considering contacting Apple to get my money back.
