New Music Metadata

After manually refreshing the metadata for a few artists and albums, I decided to refresh the whole library. I was very impressed. Great job!

I don’t think I ever had album reviews before (it was a Premium Library) and the artist info was often non-existent, or close to it. There’s almost too much information now.

It looks like it’s refreshing metadata alphabetically by artist, and it’'s almost finished the “A’s” It’s like a whole new music library.

Looking forward to using the “moods” and “styles” information, to see how well it works in the Radio playlists. My only disappointment so far is I don’t see a Plex Mix.

Once again, fantastic improvement.

And you’ll notice you didn’t have to do the Plex Dance!

Been fortunate, probably. I’ve been re-building my music library slowly over the last 6 months, and spend a bit of time ensuring the embedded metadata was correct before added to the library. Only had a couple of Plex Dances, but I still know all the steps!

I’ve been involved in testing this new release. For Music libraries, the Dance should be pretty much dead. Hopefully the learnings from this effort will enable Plex to kill the Dance in other library types.

What weird with this release though is that I suddenly have two different music scanners in my library options:

“Plex Music” and “Plex Music Scanner” are both listed in the scanner section. Huh?

Leave it at ‘Plex Music’, if you want the new stuff.
The other one will get removed, further down the road.

I added a new music library, pointed it at everything, after liking what I see I decided to delete my old library. So far so good!

Looks good so far. Is there going to be a Plex mix alternative or is that option gone for good?

I don’t know, but I’m wondering if the “radios” are a replacement for that. I never used Plex Mix, and I haven’t played with the radios, so I don’t know.

We’re discussing alternatives. Starting a mix or a radio station from a track is a feature we don’t want to lose forever.

not too pleased with the matching specially on the genre tags. I sampled a couple of artist and the genre tags are all wrong. everything is getting tagged as Pop/Rock when I know for sure that the genre is not (slayer being tagged as pop/rock for example).

I am not sure that I will be using this on my library until that is fixed. and that was not the case the before.

Open the edit dialog for the album, go to the ‘Tags’ tab
look at the ‘Styles’ field.
This is due to how Genre is handled on MusicBrainz.

If you want your embedded genre tags to get preferred, you need to enable ‘Prefer Local Metadata’.

Hey guys,

I’m liking the new metadata, but how do I get Plex to apply it to all the current artist and albums that were already in my library? I’m only seeing it on new files I add.

Thanks

In theory, you just Refresh Metadata on those artists. Or add a new album to an already existing artist.
Or Refresh Metadata on the whole library at once.

Ok, I’ll give that a go. Thanks

Are you able to say if it is planned to display Styles in the UI for easy browsing?

Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about. What are “styles for easy browsing”?

I mean, the genres are currently displayed in the UI and can be clicked on to browse other albums or artists under that same genre. Will the styles also be added to the UI since they are much more descriptive?

Also, not sure where to report this but the “Custom Filter” option is broken for music tracks.

Yeah, the custom Filter is pretty well useless for tracks, Can’t search by track artist (to include tracks from compilation and/or collaboration albums.) You can only search by album artist, so a lot of tracks can be missed if their under a VA compilation album. In most cases, you don’t see the track artist under the “Artist” column, unless the metadata in the file lists the artist as something other than the album artist. You can filter by year, and get results, but the “Year” column won’t display anything. Everything in the tracks filter is based on the album or artist, so you can’t filter by track “mood” or “genre”

I still like the new system, but I think it needs to be more “track” based to accommodate a lot of things that people expect a music app to do.

Hey,

So I’ve noticed that Plex seems to get the artist biographies etc from Allmusic.com or Last.fm. I’ve been going through my artists and letting the metadata take over what I had originally (time consuming, haha). But it’s stopped filling in the info and it’s artists that definitely have metadata on those site I mentioned at the start.

Am I missing something?

I’ve noticed this issue while at work, connecting to my server via Chrome. I’ve got a red exclamation symbol next to remote access in settings. Could this be linked?

Thanks
