"New Player" doesn't stop auto-enabling its garbage self

I’m not familiar with how to pull down the capture you’re suggesting. It’s appears to be all channels that are affected, with both tuners (HDHR regular/ATSC/Antenna/MPEG2 locals, and HDHR Prime/CableCard/Comcast/H.264&MPEG2. These tune and play back fine when fully recorded (even with new player); they just do the bizarre 3 or 4 minute freeze\ when viewing live with the new player on Shield TV client. They also playback fine live within either Chrome or the Plex app in Windows, also remote on the same Plex server/tuners.

I don’t get ATSC in my country of residence (nor do I think any of the Android team do). In a terminal, you should be able to do something like

where the first part is the IP address of your HDHR and the v44 bit is the channel number (you can find the exact URL you’re hitting in the logs of the server)

Here are three 5-minute samples scraped from both an HDHR Prime (2x Comcast/CableCard/AVC) and HDHR3-US (ATSC antenna/MPEG2):

I hit “shuffle” to watch a bunch of TV shows and it always gets “stuck” when an episode ends/starts and it never starts the next episode unless I intervene.

The old player does not do this. It does this on every tv show, no matter how it’s encoded.

It does it only with the new player. The old player never has this issue.

Just checking in @DaveBinM. I sent samples of both HDHR tuners exhibiting the 4 minute or so freeze. I am current with the Shield/Android TV client and just upgraded the server to 1.20.1.3252 (from 1.20.0.3133) and the new player continues to freeze. It’s remarkably consistent. Going back to the old player, I get perfect live TV without the freezes, though seeking is still (as it has always been) a mess, sometimes going back to the previous program. I’d really like to be able to switch to the new player, but this is an obvious showstopper. This needs to be fixed before you make it mandatory, making Live viewing impossible for many of us. Please tell me how I can help with any more logs, but I was hoping your engineers could at least have looked at the sample tuner captures I sent by now.

I have to say I’m disappointed with the feeling that plex on android is always in beta,

few things I’ve noticed,

Lip sync often broken once you click “skip intro”
I also get the whole, 2 episodes in on shuffle then black screen and nothing,
Performance issues with AI enabled on shield tv, on certain content.
Old player was much more stable, bring that back perm, I’m loosing faith it feels that plex on android is always in alpha.
Also I would like to see an offline mode in the android tv app, during outages it can be handy

It happens at times besides skip-intro, too. This conversation has become a ritual every time we play something on the Shield now.

Just don’t know why this stuff hasn’t been addressed yet, very frustrating, loading up emby see how the performance is on there

Using Plex is definitely an exercise in simultaneous joy and frustration. Emby really is ok, though you kind of need to re-learn everything and it feels weird at times once you’re used to Plex.

I understand. Like I said before, I’m patient and so long as old player continues to function, at least I’m good for now (though I’ll only be at this location another week and don’t know when I’ll return). One other thing: though I rarely use Plex on my second Shield (2017 version), I tried it last night and get exactly the same behavior on my main OG Shield.

Finally found the active thread for this bug! Having the exact same issue with the new player. At the end of a TV show, auto-play will attempt to play the same episode I’ve just watched again. However, it just displays a black screen. The progress bar shows the episode is playing and the “skip intro” button appears but nothing else. I have a 4K Fire Stick and 4K Fire TV dongle, happens on both. Notice it a LOT when the kid is watching Adventure Time as the episodes are only 10m long.

I’m in bed now but I’ll see about retrieving client logs from my stick tomorrow if I get time. Is there a bug tracking page for this issue I should pop them on?

I intend to, like I said, I was in bed, didn’t have access to that info at the time. I’ll collect some more examples from today and submit it along with client versions, logs and server version later on.

Well I get a 20"ish screen on a 110" screen when using the new player. As well as many other issues. With this obviously being the most noticeable.

I have been disabling the new player with every update. With an update over the weekend, I can’t even disable it. It says “No”, but the interface and issues are the new player. I can’t watch Live TV on my Fire TV 4k anymore.

^^^ this exactly. This awful new Android TV client update just made my Live TV completely useless. It has forced the new player mode even when it is explicitly disabled in settings. I have given sample captures outside of Plex as requested. We’ve all been very patiently waiting for a fix for this and are now getting nothing but silence. @DaveBinM, we are owed some kind of resolution here. If you are still on holiday/vacation, can you kindly assign this issue to someone else who can help us? This can’t be THAT hard to fix with as many reports as you’ve received. In the meantime, is it so much to ask you to actually disable that annoying new player and let it STAY disabled until you can provide us a proper resolution? It’s literally about one line of code.

I’m confused on the issues that are in this thread as there appears to be a few different ones.

If you are experiencing issues with the postplay, replaying the previous episodes please try our latest release (v8.8.1), these issues should of been resolved.

If you are experiencing freezing when playing Live TV with the new player, can you disable refresh rate and resolution switching. Play the channel via the new player, ensure you get the freezing, then exit playback. If you could share the logs I can take a look.
