Is there a thread for us to post or a Trac or something just to keep an eye on this? Or will keeping a list of “broken” shows be irrelevant if alternate ordering is implemented, i.e. it won’t matter if a show has alternate ordering as you can toggle how it is named on disk?
So far though, everything seems to be working great! New scanner/agent even helped me pick up on two shows that hadn’t been named properly. Although mayhaps that’s an issue? TaleSpin had episodes labelled ‘101’ etc and wasn’t picked up. Tom & Jerry had episode numbers following an ‘EPxxx’ pattern and that also wasn’t picked up.
It’s high on our priority to support alternate orderings as soon as everyone is back from holiday next year so I wouldn’t worry about reporting any shows where this is causing problems (only if the show is not matching correctly at all).
I’m curious, would we really want that ? Take a leading cast member from something like the simpsons, greys anatomy or the x files as examples would lead to 100s of search results if you searched what that cast member was in.
We actually already have this information but clients don’t support this yet (although the iOS client seems to have accidental support) and it’s only guest appearances for that episode, not the recurring cast.
I would.
Ever seen Fargo - The Series?
Ever tried to find a cast member from say, Season 4, in a huge horizontal list and try to identify one of the white actors?
First, you have to skim right, horizontally a few miles to get to the black actors, skipping some black actors and checking them out - in case one is out of place - then when you get to what might be the Season 3 Cast, you can start looking more closely at the offerings (and you say - that’s Chris Rock? Yea, I guess so - he’s not behind a smile - the image that would be a dead giveaway - 'cause he’d be smiling in it and we would say: Yea, that’s Chris Rock, but no… we have to still try to identify him all frowny faced under a Mafia 3 Hat - and we’ve never seen him like that). Then you find out that crazy white woman you’re looking for isn’t in any other shows you have, or have seen, so you leave there go to the Search Area to try to hunt her down in Movies manually - BECAUSE SHOWS AND MOVIES LIVE IN TWO SEPARATE GALAXIES. Then you find a couple of movies she’s in.
Plex starts with the filename and uses the folder name as support. If changing the folder changes the matching, then your filenames are not working in the first place so YMMV when using the folder name.
There’s a small warning to this, if you use Video Preview Thumbnails.
If you test with the same folders as an existing library, because the media parts refer to the same files, Video Preview Thumbnails won’t need to be generated a second time. Yay!
But! If you Delete preview thumbnails on one Library, you’re actually deleting the thumbnails for the files themselves, which affects both Libraries.

I’m pretty sure that’s correct TheTVDB naming. TVDB has Cloak & Dagger listed as an alias.
IMDB prefers “Cloak & Dagger” (2018), but does have “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” listed as an alias. I would have expected this to work. Help?
Edit: This appears to be caused by the extra/unnecessary/unwanted (YEAR) in the show name. I’ve never had problems with it before, and I’m not having problems with it on other shows - but hey, everybody’s luck runs out. Apparently TVDB’s expectation is that (YEAR) is only present when necessary to resolve conflicts, not all the time.
So, maybe a request: allow (YEAR) to be used in all Show filenames? That would be consistent with movies, and would be pleasingly consistent.
I’m really excited about this, because the new movie agent is just awesome.
I know DVD-order isn’t ready yet, which is a-ok! But someone brought this up earlier in the thread, and I may have missed the answer: With the new agent, can we add a tag or a keyword to the TV show’s folder name to denote it’s in DVD-order (or some other order!) instead of airdate? That way Plex has the information it needs to automatically choose the correct order during the initial scan.
Edit: Come to think of it, Plex could theoretically maintain a db of the differences between the airdate and DVD order for each show, and quickly scan the filenames to decide automagically. That would be fun!
Did you Plex Dance the files after renaming? When Plex tries to match it adds a hint to the database so that future files will match properly. This hint isn’t removed unless you Plex Dance.

AFAIK, we don’t support aliases. I could be wrong, but I haven’t seen that work.
They don’t have a strict rule on that, but sometimes even a uniquely named show needs it. It’s a mystery when the year is NOT needed.
pretty sure the Cloak & Dagger issue is a DB issue on our side based on a conversation I saw the devs having about that specific show.
I won’t stop folks from trying different naming but please 1 report it here so the devs can look into it with exact file names you have and 2. if possible do a Fix Match which is essentially another way help the agent when it sees whatever title format you used again
I did a test with 11.22.63 by naming the show folder “11.22.63 {tvdb-301824}” but the matching doesn’t work. Title display the tvdb id but need to do a manual fix.
Will do other check, otherwise wait a next preview which provide same support as for movies.
