Plex uses episode release dates as the episode title

Server Version#: 1.20.2.3370

I have a TV library set to use the TheTVDB agent with the Plex Scanner Series scanner. This library language is set to English.

I’m adding the Season 3 of Are You The One? (BR) ( Are You The One? Brasil - TheTVDB.com )

Since the Season 3 episodes for this tv show in TVDB don’t have English translations, somehow the TheTVDB agent instead of NOT using any title for the episodes, it uses the release date:

The expected behavior would be NOT filling out the Title and Sort Title fields.

Please provide a directory listing, showing directory structure and file names, including extensions.

Are these MP4 files? This might be an issue with metadata embedded in the files.

Go to Settings -> Server -> Agent -> Shows. For TheTVDB agent, make sure Local Media Assets (TV) is at the bottom of the selected agents. Then refresh the metadata for the series.

You can also inspect the files with MediaInfo or Plex’s XML Info to look for embedded metadata.

Using the following structure, the show matches and the episodes are named “Episódio 1”, “Episódio 2,” etc.

That looks like you may have an embedded title in the file so it’s using that. If there isn’t a title on TheTVDB, PMS should use Episode 1, Episode 2, etc.

The files have no embedded title at all. I’ve confirmed this with MediaInfo.

Actually the filenames don’t matter here, since I tried out different ones, this is a metadata issue not a scanner issue. (The files are identified as Episode 1,2,3 on plex, just the metadata of the title is wrong.)

I already have it like this.

There is not metadata embedded on the files.

I just created a new library with just this TV show and the same title problem appears.

Looks like you have some bad data in your agent cache. Clear it out and refresh the show. https://support.plex.tv/articles/202967376-clearing-plugin-channel-agent-http-caches/

I redid this on a different plex server that did not have this show added before. Even so I redid the library after deleting all the tvdb agent cache and it didn’t matter.

I provided the ones that the agent creates on the file system. Anyway for the Episode 1 here is the XML asked:

This issue is replicated across different machines/plex servers for me.

I was able to reproduce the issue with that show, but not with others. I’ll need to check if there is an issue with the fallback when English data isn’t available or if something from TheTVID is actually giving the date as a title.

The episodeName is set to null, followed exactly by the firstAired field in both examples. I don’t see anything wrong with the JSON response, so my guess this is something wrong with the plex parsing the response.

Unfortunately it seems that this issue was forgotten or not picked up at all. In the case that someone finally tries to fix this problem with the agent I found another TV show where this also happens:

These are not daily shows, these are tv shows that have no defined episode English titles on TheTVDB and by some reason plex fails to understand that and uses the release date of the same episodes as title.

Unfortunately I don’t think anyone in Plex is working/assigned at the moment to update/fix the Plex TV agent (it seems so by the lack of updates I’m getting here on a clear bug). I had way more luck in fixing a problem on the new Plex Movie agent thanks to @drzoidberg33 and the rest of the team actually being active in fixing and improving that same agent.
