Using a DLINK DIR 885L Router
Went into the router and made sure that UPnP is enabled. Toggled it on and off a couple of times.
Turned off the McAfee firewall
Toggled Disable/Enable Remote access
Still getting “Not available outside your network”
Tried toggling “Manually specify public port 32400” a couple of times hit retry and get
“Fully accessible outside your network” but then reverts back to “Not available outside your network”
Any ideas how I can get the automatic configuration to work? Thanks for your assistance.
Setup a port forwarding
https://www.dlink.co.id/how-do-i-open-ports-on-my-dir-885l-router/
Thanks. I understand how to get into the router menu however at that point it is asking for a number of entries:
name
application name
local ip
computer name
protocol
external port
internal port
schedule
Most of which I have no idea how to populate.
Is there any way to get the remote access working without port forwarding? Would a different router help? Presumably the automatic forwarding does work some times?
Upnp or automatic forwarding works but isn’t stable.
Name - Plex
Application name - Plex
Local ip - 192.168.0.1 or whatever your PC with plex is
Computer name - can probably be left blank
External port - 32400 unless you changed the default
Internal port 32400 unless you changed the default
Schedule - 24/7
Make sure your Plex machine has a static IP address as well.
Thanks very helpful.
I am running Plex on a Windows 10 PC so I assume I set up a static address in Windows:
Network connection > Wi-Fi > Properties > Internet Protocol 4 > Properties.
At present it is set to Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Sever Address Automatically so I assume I change them to Use the following IP address and Use the Following DNS Server address? Then I need:
IP Address:
Subnet mask:
Default gateway:
and
Preferred DNS Server :
Alternate DNS Sever:
Any thoughts on what I would enter for these?
Will these changes impact other devices that are connected to my network?
Thanks for your help.
Yep that is right…
You can setup a reservation in your router under DHCP settings for this PC so it will not change which is just like a static but a little more complicated. You will need your MAC address which you should be able to find by typing ipconfig /all under a command prompt.
If not you will need to see what ranges you hand out and pick something outside of that range.
Unless other devices connect to this PC by IP it should not impact much.
You can also just specify the IP and let it obtain DNS as it does today.
I could not figure out how to set up the static address in my router so I decided to try it in Windows.
Ran the ipconfig command to get the information.
Changed the Internet Protocol 4 properties from “Obtain an IP address automatically” to “Use the following IP address” Then added:
IP Address - used the IPv4 address I got from ipconfig
Subnet mask: used what I got from ipconfig
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 again from ipconfig
Preferred DND Server and Alternate DNS Server - obtained those addresses from my router since in my Ipconfig the default gateway and DNS server were both 192.168.1.1
Clicked OK.
Then went back to the server and manually specified port 32400, the same one I opened in the router, hit retry and enable remote access. Got the “Fully accessible outside your network” message.
Loaded the Plex app on my iPhone and was able to connect to my library. Went back to the Plex server on my desktop and it now says. “Not available outside your network. Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.” Tried it a couple more times it first goes to accessible and then after a few seconds to not reachable
Very strange however I can still see my library and play a file on my phone, even after I disconnected from my Wi-Fi and went on cellular.
Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks.
Correction, now shows as unreachable on my phone.
Check canyouseeme.org for success on your port forwarding.
Usually everything is on the same subnet 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x are different subnets and you mentioned both above.
Do you have internet access on your machine with a static IP address set?
I initially screwed up in the port forwarding on my router. I set up something called virtual server which was on the router port forwarding menu. Anyway, as I have it now the port forwarding is set up in my router is as below:
Name: Plex
Local IP: 192.168.0.184 (this is the address that shows up IPv4 with the ipconfig command)
TCP Port: 32400
UDP Port: N/A
Schedule: Always Enable
Still when I try canyouseeme I get:
Error: I could not see your service on 172.98.67.53 on port ( 32400 )
Reason:Connection refused
Port 80 is open.
The 192.168.1.1 was a typo. Both show as 192.168.0.1. In Windows I used
IP Address - 192.168.0.184
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
Preferred DND Server: 66.102.92.3
Alternate DNS Server: 66.102.92.103
Went back to the router and it shows:
IP Address: 45.78.121.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 66.102.91.2
Primary DNS Server: 66.102.92.3
Secondary DNS Server: 66.102.92.103
I am so confused…
Hi, that 45. address is your outside address that your internet provider gives you, or to your router. the 192 address is one that your router gives to your computer. your router has about 250 addresses it can give out, then it should start reassigning the oldest ones to new internal connections. Normally you will keep the same one. this should be the support page for your router DIR-885L/R AC3150 Ultra Wi-Fi Router
If you have never updated your routers firmware, there are two updates there that you may need to apply to your router( the last one is a security update), you also want to get your user manual DIR-885L AC3150 Ultra Wi-Fi Router
In plex click on “setting”, then “remote access”, you may need to click “show advance” you should see green arrows. You will see a “X” where you have trouble. You may have to put your public port in the box and click the box. Read Remote Access, Troubleshooting Remote Access, you may have to open ports in you OS’es firewall, What network ports do I need to allow through my firewall? . Hope this helps.
Thanks. I did update the router.
It seems that I needed to open the 32400 port in Windows as well as in the router. Used these instructions. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-open-firewall-ports-in-windows-10,36451.html
It now works with green arrows:
Private fe80::8469:8583:3ba9:fa51%20 : 32400 Public 45.78.121.100 : 32400 Internet
However it only seems to work if:
I turn off the McAfee firewall. I suppose I need to find some way of opening that 32400 port in McAfee?
I am not using my VPN. Would I need to insert the VPN address somewhere for Plex remote to work with the VPN on?
Thanks again for the assistance with this.
did a search for you, McAfee Firewall open ports I think the second link is the one you want.
Thanks. Looks good!
