New Xbox One App preview

As you may have noticed we’ve been working hard on a rewrite of the Plex application for our smart tv and console platforms. Following up the on the previews for LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast and Samsung Tizen we are ready to present to you a preview of the Xbox One application!

Just like the LG webOS, Vizio, and Samsung versions of the preview this application has been rewritten from the ground up, taking advantage of WebGL for better performance.

This preview release should include much of the same features as the existing Xbox One application, but there are still a few features that are currently missing (like TIDAL and DVR scheduling) as we work towards feature parity. However, we did bring in some much-requested features as well like Skip Intro and a the Live TV Guide.

We will eventually be replacing the current Plex app that’s in the Microsoft store on the Xbox One with this version once we’ve reached parity and ironed out the kinks. We’re looking for feedback and reports about functional issues with the preview app. Does anything not play as expected? Does a particular action cause a crash? Does clicking a button not perform the action? Is something not displayed on the screen correctly? While we’re certainly interested in feedback about UI/UX of our apps in general, this new preview app is intended to follow the same basic UI design of our other current (TV layout) apps.

How to access the preview:

  • Make sure your app has updated to version 2.56.2.70. If it hasn’t updated then visiting the store page for the app usually triggers an update.
  • Choose ‘Enable Early Access’ in the user options menu of the current app. If you want to return to the old app, select ‘Leave Early Access’ from the user options menu in the preview version of the app.
    • If you don’t see the option to enter early access, try restarting the app and try again

Known Issues / Limitations:

  • Subtitle sizes are different
  • TV Show Theme Music
  • Unable to change language / search term when searching for subtitles
  • Preview images while seeking aren’t displayed
  • Stopping a played episode doesn’t show the post-play screen unless you watch to the end of the file

How to report issues:

Please open a new thread using the xbox-one-preview tag to ask questions or report issues with this preview. Please include the Xbox One model.

Does the new Xbox app fix the buffer issues that have been going on for years on the Xbox?

That is the only thing I thought about when I saw this post. I currently have a 70Mb 4k video playing without issue. HDR looks great. I am able to fast forward and skip ahead without any hiccups now. I would have usually had it buffer by now too but time will tell. Going to let the whole video play and report back. I’m very excited about this. Really hoping that I can stop switching over to my TV to use Plex.

Edit: I just watched the full move with no buffering. I’m calling it a win.

Would be nice if the Continue Watching tray used the background images within specific libraries (like it does on Home) rather than the poster art.

Very glad to see the screensaver photo slideshow! Definitely a feature I’ve wanted for a while. Also not having a limit on the “More By” and “More With” trays is a big plus. So far very much liking this compared to the old version!

I’m real happy to see I can queue albums! Now when I have “Led Zeppelin Day” I can queue it all up and go about my business. This all looks a little better than the older application. If the buffering for movies is really fixed as kabtisimo suggests, I’m ecstatic!

Looks good just bring back or fix the * TV Show Theme Music*

So far so good, but I miss the end time of a movie on the OSD. Can that be brought back?

This is amazing. I’ve already been using the Preview on my Samsung TV, fantastic to see it’s come to Xbox.

The new UI looks much cleaner, and Live TV Guide finally :). I’ll be trying this out over the coming days to see how the performance fares with the new rewrite.

Awesome.

i’ve just tried the xbox one app. i mainly use it for music.

i don’t like how you have removed the automatic selection (when i move down my pinned sources it used to automatically load, now you have to press A )

i don’t like how you have removed the ‘go to artist’ shortcut once you are in an album. i use this all the time to go to the artist and select another album of theirs.

it’s nice to now have the album reviews and the images i guess but those two above make it much less slick

thanks

Looking good to me. Buffering issues seem to be resolved.

Episode titles are missing on the “On Deck” section in the preview for me.

I’m still having buffering issues for resuming play on videos that have forced subtitle tracks.

I’m assuming this is the place for feedback?

  1. How do you revert back to the old app?

  2. Can you guys find a way to reduce the amount of stuff on the screen while paused? I like to pause for subtitles sometimes as I’m not a fast reader. But right now, a lot of info and a semi-transparent background blocks them.

  3. All videos marked as played are the opposite of how they’re marked in the old app. Right now it looks like played videos are marked with a yellow strip at the bottom of the icon. But in the old app yellow indicated a video that is unplayed.

The recently added live tv feature isn’t showing anywhere on the updated app?

New app is great so far but tiny subtitles are way to big. They are like three times the size of the non preview version.

Chapter skipping is no longer DPAD Up/Down. Anybody know what it is now?

I haven’t had any buffering issues so far. I’m really waiting for the Watch Together function.

Toggling subtitles during playback doesn’t seem to take effect for me. I have to back out to the episode screen and toggle them from there and then start playing the episode again.

Where the hell are folders!!! Broken on all apps now. I need and want to sort my own movies/media by folder and the option is no longer available. Makes this new app useless for me. It’s there when I launch from a browser, but not on this new Xbox app or any mobile device or shield TV, etc. I’m pissed off
