As you may have noticed we’ve been working hard on a rewrite of the Plex application for our smart tv and console platforms. Following up the on the previews for Xbox One, LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast, and Samsung Tizen we are ready to present to you a preview of the PlayStation 4 app!
Just like the Xbox One, LG webOS, Vizio, and Samsung versions of the preview this application has been rewritten from the ground up.
This preview release should include much of the same features as the existing PlayStation 4 application, but there are still a few features that are currently missing (like TIDAL and DVR scheduling) as we work towards feature parity. However, we did bring in some much-requested features as well like Skip Intro and a the Live TV Guide.
We will eventually be replacing the current Plex app that’s in the PlayStation store on the PlayStation 4 with this version once we’ve reached parity and ironed out the kinks. We’re looking for feedback and reports about functional issues with the preview app. Does anything not play as expected? Does a particular action cause a crash? Does clicking a button not perform the action? Is something not displayed on the screen correctly? While we’re certainly interested in feedback about UI/UX of our apps in general, this new preview app is intended to follow the same basic UI design of our other current (TV layout) apps.
How to access the preview:
Make sure your app has updated to version 4.29.10. If it hasn’t updated then please try waiting a while and closing the app and re-opening it.
Choose ‘Enable Early Access’ in the user options menu of the current app. If you want to return to the old app, select ‘Leave Early Access’ from the user options menu in the preview version of the app.
How to report issues:
Please open a new thread using the ps4-preview tag to ask questions or report issues with this preview. Please include the PlayStation 4 model.
I love it so far and have been waiting for an update to the PS4 app with a more clean interface.
One bug have I found is; When choosing the “Small” subtitle it becomes italic but on the other sizes the subs are displayed correct.
I have only tried this in the TV-section but maybe it is the same in the Movies. Edit: It is the same in “Movies”, choosing “Small” subtitles makes them italic. Edit 2: Now it seems like all sizes of subs are correct except for the “Normal” size that is now Italic. It has changed without any interaction from me.
Oh, and I am using the app on a PS4 Pro with all the latest updates applied on both the PS4 and the Plex media server on macOS. #ps4-preview
Does the app have proper 4k x265 HDR 10bit support yet? I’ve been using my NVIDIA Shield for plex, which is obviously the better option, but I’m looking to minimize my set up in my bedroom. So, I’d prefer to use my PS4 for my media player as well.
The new app has a great style. Congratulations.
But I have a couple of problems that did not occur to me with the previous edition:
I am Plex Pass with multiple users. When I choose my username to enter, the application stays loading for about 2 minutes until something appears … Is this normal?
And then another thing that I miss: in the reproductions, before you could see the time at which the playback was going to end and now it does not. Is this available somewhere or can it be put back in this version?
@sjsoukup See How do updates work for PS4 (or PS3). The platform package hasn’t been updated since 2019, but the application is updated regularly. No update from the store is needed to get these app updates.
I noticed this too!
The app was updated yesterday with tweaks to the “Sesons” where “Next playing” was looking new, but it never prompted me to update the app itself.
Still experiencing some crashes though on some occasions when watching “Series”, but report them all through the PS4-system.
I have been seeing lots of crashes on my PS4,most times playback is fine till its done then crashes when closes movie,or that’s fine but searching for subtitles crashes. As far as subtitles go they stop showing for minute or 2 then comeback for a minute then quit again which is very annoying as I am hard of hearing and these same subtitles work on my galaxy s9+. At this point is there a way to row back the App till you can fix the beta?
I also see several problems with the subs in the beta.
They work well when I have subs added as a separate file (.srt .sub .idx and so on)
But sometimes these are “discoloured” and suddenly just loose their outline.
Another thing is that when I have a locally saved sub that is bad synced and I choose another language sub from open subtitles.org either the app ignores my choice or just shows no sub at all. In the subs selector it shows that the “new” sub is selected though…
I now notice that it I have a .mkv file with an “integrated” sub, say English the Plex app will automatically choose this sub regardless if I have another sub, say Norwegian, that I choose in the Plex app on the PS4 Pro.
Even if I choose to use a sub from open subtitles.org, the Plex app on the PS4 will not activate this.
Would love to see the interfaces upgraded to native 4K. On the PS4 text and screenshots are grainy (actually granier than on the current release Roku Plex app)
I second this as a general request. The current UI doesn’t bother me at all on PS4 Pro in 4K, but it will be even more obvious on the PS5 when the main UI is already in native 4K.
The new Playstation 4 app works like ■■■■!
It Crashes and its impossible to choose a new subtitle. No matter how much i press the X button the screen stays in same place and does not select the actual subtitle.
i press the X button and the select the subtitle but it never leaves the menu and goes back to the movie screen.
The app sound displays that something has been pushed but as I´m saying the subtitles never gets selected.
