New Samsung Tizen App Preview

Hey! I just tested it on my TV and noticing up and down arrow won’t forward or backwards the video as it used to do. Is there a way to keep this?

You experiencing buffering?

If you are really using 4.29.6, your question is in the wrong place. This thread is only for issues with the preview version (5.0.9).

Samsung RU7400 - Tizen 5.0

First of all let me thank you for this new update. I really liked this new interface, it runs smoothly even better than before and has some pretty good features (like sub searching).

After like 30 minutes of using this preview version I’ve come to these observations, some of them have been mentioned already:

  • HDR movies appear like UHD / 4K only, would be nice to know which one is HDR and which one is not

  • Subtitles are hard to follow and read now, they don’t have shadows which would help in that regard. Another thing is that it’s not possible to change the color, it sticks to white.

  • Also for subs, it would be nice to have the possibility to change the font.

  • Device resolution shows 1920x1080, which is not the best for 4K TVs

  • Minor thing but IMDb rating shows in %, not in score format

  • As someone mentioned before, Fwd and Rwd function works weird, worse than before. I can’t forward or rewind it as fast as before (there is no speed Fwd/Rwd function: 1x, 2x, 3x)

  • Feedback Sound can be disabled, but it keeps sounding even though it is unmarked

  • Another thing with subtitles is that the function for synchronizing is not available anymore, I don’t know if this is just me not having it (or not finding it) or it was removed in this version

  • When you’re in the movie description, “related movies” or “more with X actor” show first instead of Cast, which I think it should be the other way (first Cast, then the other)

Lol I responded to another comment.

I experienced the issue that, when I leave the Screensaver the screen stays gray during play. Sound and subtitles worked, had to stop the movie and restart it to fix this.

Also starting media where you left off doesn’t seem to work, it always starts from the beginning.

Thank you for the grid view. All in all tested a bit. Haven’t found any problems atm. Will respond back if there will be some.

I can’ play any VC1 Rips (MKV, EAC3). I get “An unexptcted playback problem occured”, with 4.29.6 they play fine with direct play.

Strange, that seems to work fine for me in limited testing.

Long overdue Live TV guide and a really good first attempt. Haven’t played with the guide too much yet but I noticed right off that the channel sort order is random. Like other posters I use xteve to put my channels in my order using channel number and the guide is not using channel number for sorting. Also would really like to see some type of paging commands for navigation. Arrowing down and up on the remote one channel at a time (especially with no sort order) through a lot of channels amounts to fishing and running down the remote batteries.
I do appreciate finally getting the guide - comes close to making the app worth the money I paid for it.

After enabling early access, the Media Server Status suggests my server is remote, and files get transcoded based on my remote playback settings. However, if I disable early access to go back to the old version again I see the player correctly recognises my server as “Nearby” (ie. on the local network).

Update: It looks like the new player is less tolerant of DNS rebinding protection. I fixed that on my pfSense router and now both old and new players show my server as Nearby.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I’ve gone through everyone’s comments and have logged internal issues for issues that have been brought up. I won’t be able to respond to all of you, but here are general comments for some of the issues and questions.

The resolution shown in the about screen shows 1920x1080 even though I have a 4k TV

The application’s UI runs in 1920 x 1080. The old app version was also running in 1920 x 1080, so nothing has changed there. This is just a display issue of the menu item showing the application’s resolution instead of what your TV would play videos at. Some have mentioned the UI is slightly blurrier, and that’s an effect of the application now rendering everything as textures, so there’s a possible loss of some fidelity there, compared to the old app which rendered with HTML. We’re looking into seeing if we can improve this.

Missing TV theme songs

This is something we haven’t added to the new app yet. Don’t worry, it’ll be added back.

The player itself is a bit bland there, are there any plans to add more info, like say the current quality / bitrate / audio track?

No plans yet, but I’ll bring it up with the team

@Vader266

I know this is probably a common question, but are there any plans to port this to non-UHD TVs?

Yes, the plan is to bring this app to all 2016+ devices including FHD

@SeveranExp

player is forcing transcoding of content that used to direct play before:

Can you DM me logs and/or the media’s xml info?

@theazza_gmail_com

I could previously highlight a show or movie from the home screen and press the play button on the remote to play a show or movie

There was some complications around this functionality, but it will be added back soon.

@scottkiely

No quick access to change steam quality in the player bar. Now have an extra few clicks to change the quality.

There is a gear icon on the left side of the player buttons, you can select player quality from there.

@yooshaw

When I “Enter Early Access,” I am unable to connect to my server (on the same local network). Clicking on Media Server Status shows my server is “offline or unreachable.”

Check to see if your server requires secured connections and check the app to see if the secure connections setting matches what your server requires. You can also try setting manual server IP

@mozpri

What model TV do you have?

@edjalmo_bf

I can’t select the language in subtitles search anymore.

Language selection for subtitles hasn’t been implemented yet. It will be added back soon.

@anothername

Does this happen in the old app? And does this happen for every channel? If so, can you enable Log to media server in Settings → Advanced and send them to me?

@jeffrhap

Also starting media where you left off doesn’t seem to work, it always starts from the beginning.

This works for me. Are you getting the prompt to resume or start over, and selecting resume is starting from the beginning? If so, can you send me logs of this happening?

Which log files do you need?

Just looking at the dashboard I can see it’s not transcoding like old app

PMS logs.

Just an additional one that cropped up today.

If, during playback of video media, the app timesout and goes to screensaver, when resuming play, the video is a blank whilst the audio continues to play. There is also no UI available.

This is most noticeable with subtitles on because you can see the subs still rolling on screen with audio whilst the video is black.

I can try and video this for you. Workaround is to back out to the title menu and resume playback.

Another MISSING FEATURE:

Seek thumbnails are currently missing in the new app. I’m sure you’re aware and working on it though.

Just REAFFIRMING, I have been using the new app daily and going back and forth to compare when I perceive any differences.

I can say without a shadow of doubt that:
The new app animations are not as smooth. The old app felt buttery smooth. Are you running at 30fps or lower vs the old app at 60?

Navigating menus feels clunky and jarring. The only thing that is better in the menus right now is the thumbnails don’t have any load time.

The entire interface looks and feels very b grade. The old app looks and feels very polished.

The new player control bar is missing fast forward/reverse. The menu info box doesn’t show anything I didn’t know already.

Any chance your team could add icons for HDR, AAC, Atmos, Dolby Digital, Dolby Vision, etc? It looks cleaner, and is easier for people that don’t know what AC3 is. I know it used to be there a long time ago. Right now even HDR doesn’t show up and it just lists everything 4K, whether it is HDR or not.

Apologies if these have been mentioned previously =)

The preview app looks great! I’ve enabled early access on my U8000 for the past couple of days. I’m not entirely sure if the following are issues or intentional changes:

  • Shuffle/Repeat now nested in a separate menu requiring more clicks to enable
  • Now unable to press ‘Play’ on remote control on a highlighted item from the Plex home screen / on deck
  • Playback is now paused when viewing the upcoming queue list rather than an overlay
  • During playback in previous releases you could see what time a video was due to finish (ie start a 1h30m movie at 10:10pm would show 11:40pm for finish time)

Happy to report video playback and performance has been fine otherwise.

Another suggestion, delete media and the associated subtitle file.

@sLumpy I’ve sent you a message with logs
