Hi, longtime plex user here. Had some chaos following the password reset as widely reported here by the looks of things.
I’m trying to run a completely new account, set up today using a new email and password.
It looked fine until I tried to add libraries, movies, music etc. from folders on my windows laptop (a fairly new one running Windows 11).
Clicking anything related to “your media” or “add library” etc directs to a page asking to download plex. With just one link directing to the Plex downloads webpage.
There doesn’t seem to be any way of adding local media. And obviously I already have plex downloaded. Although I have re-downloaded it a couple of times now to see what happens. Which is nothing.
I just want to stream to roku again, without the chaos that happened after I reset my password, discovered problems and couldn’t solve them.
Apologies if this has been covered before. Diving into a few recent threads, I couldn’t see anyone else being repeated asked to download plex when trying to add local media.
This should never be necessary. It will require you to not only re-claim the server into the new account, but also to log out each and every client from the old and into the new account.
If you want to carry forward anyway with this, you need to remove the former account from the Windows registry, followed by claiming the server into the new account.
Don’t forget to stop Plex server using its task tray icon before proceeding.
See You need to reclaim your server, but don't dare to touch the Windows Registry
on how to remove the former account.
Then follow New Claiming Requirement for Windows to reclaim the server.
Hi thanks,
I played around with those instructions and ended up accidentally claiming my old account, which now looks normal and un-messed with, but it’s still a nightmare on the Roku end.
Possibly the origin of the problem is that the Roku app is still looking for my old laptop (its name appears in some selected options). Thinking about it, the timing of the password hack and my getting a new laptop was about the same.
Looks like I need to find a way to do a complete uninstall of the app on the Roku device, which doesn’t appear straightforward but must be possible.
Anyway, thankyou. Dunno why whenever plex goes awry things are always so difficult. It’s like two or three weeks every year when I can’t stream things. And I’m techier than most without having a physics degree or anything.
Maybe go here and remove the old server (but only the old one!): https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms
