With input from @JuiceWSA (thanks!) I was able to test and therefore conclude that in fact it is the ‘transcoder’ that causes this issue, meaning that it needs to be kept on (not disabled) until a fix for the fingerprint scanner service is found by the Plex team.

That is correct, as they need to yield on platforms that can’t handle multiple realtime transcodes (the original intent of that pref). We will, however, evaluate whether we should change that behaviour.
