Hey all

So I’m visiting my father and I’ve been attempting to set him up with Plex over these last three years… Long story… This time, I’ve rewired his entire ethernet network in his bungalow, removed his multiple 4 port and 8 port network switches (of which there were a good few) and replaced with a rack mount 48 port central 3com switch. This was all because trying to do this all remotely was frustrating for me as nothing would ever seem to communicate consistently.

Previously (up until a week ago) I had installed TrueNas Core on his microserver, running Plex in a jail. I had nothing but permission issues and then when attempting to connect to change those permissions I could not connect to his Plex server remotely. I have Plex working in my own home and I decided to do a similar installation for him.

I am well aware that his AMD Turion II Neo N54L processor (2.2 GHz, 15W, 2MB) could very well be the reason why nothing is working on his older Samsung Smart TV. However, the system works fine using multiple PC’s, Android phones and iPads. I’m not looking to transcode media, just ā€˜direct-play’ internally on his network.

I’ve tried multiple videos ā€œAn unexpected error preventing playbackā€ and even audio songs have that same error… whilst writing this post I’ve reset my fathers Samsung TV twice, reinstalling Plex on both occasions. The first time I enabled the log overlay and got some buffering limit error, which I Googled and then promptly forgot the exact error. Trying to replicate that, I reinstalled a second time, set it to automatically log my fathers account in, manually specified the servers IP address in setting ā€˜Manual Servers’ set the network to accept ā€˜unsecure’ connections as Always and every now seems to be working…

Playback (once actually playing) seems fine, although there is a delay before anything actually happens.

Could you advise the ā€˜best’ settings for my use case scenario please?

I think his server will benefit from a hardware upgrade, infact primarily, that is why I’ve virtualised it. Hoping that I can just ā€˜reload’ the VM on newer hardware down the line.
