New to Plex (newb questions)

Hi,
Just started using plex (QNAP 231P NAS with home movies running Plex server. i love it so far! can watch on any tv or device in my house. However, my question:
What if my wife is watching at home, and i’m on travel in a hotel across the country. i normally take my firestick with me. How many users (or same account?) can access my server at the same time?

I looked at the (paid) description but i’m not interested in any of the features other than users (If i need to be concerned about watching at same time)

The 2 major limiting factors are:

  1. the ability of your server to transcode (and whether it can do so for several playbacks concurrently. And if so, how many?)

  2. The available bandwidth of your internet connection at home, particularly in the ‘upstream’ direction

Just try to watch with your firestick and some other device in the house at the same time. Do restrict the bitrate on the firestick, because this is very likely also necessary when you are out of home. This may trigger transcoding and therefore is a good simulation of the situation when you’re out of house.

Thanks for the reply.
So… again I’m a newb… but I thought transcoding was only needed if the client device couldnt read the file format? All my videos are mp4.

I have no idea about limiting bitrate or what that is lol.

So, im not sure if I asked my original question correctly… aside the technical capability of my server, do I need to have multiple accounts/users/profiles… what ever the correct nomenclature to do as I mentioned above? My wife at home watching while im across country watching.

Thanks again for your patience

Transcoding is also needed when there’s only a smaller bandwidth available for streaming but the file would normally require more. There is no other way to reduce the ‘size’ of the file, so that it requires less bandwidth. This is often the case when using remote connection.

Each Plex client has a preference where you can set bandwidth restrictions. Use this to simulate a remote connection with lower bandwidth.

To stream remotely you don’t need a different user. Just make sure that your server is available remotely.

Ok thank you, I tried it out and you are correct. i got an error saying the server did not have enough power to transcode.

So here spawns another question; I’ll leave the Plex server on my NAS for in home use but, can I install a second server on my computer point to my NAS for the media library, then use the my PC server for when out of town travel?
will there be a conflict in my router for which IP to forward to?

You can install and use as many servers as you like. There won’t be any conflicts.
Keep in mind though that your played/unplayed status will not travel from your desktop server to your NAS server or vice versa. If you want that, you’ll have to use 3rd party software like the trakt.tv plugin

Thank you, I can’t help to laugh…every time i think i find a a way to to do this, I come in to another problem.

So, I installed another server on my PC activated the remote server. Status shows that it is fully accessible outside the network. However, when I shut wifi off on my phone and tried to connect, it said server not available. I manually configured my router but stilll didnt help.

Finally thought to check my Cable modem since my connection is LAN>Router>Modem turned on Port forwarding on (assigned plex specified port) Modem and that seemed to have done the trick.

It might just have been an issue with the mobile app not having up-to-date server info. Is usually cured by re-starting the mobile app.

I tried logging out abd closing initially… using web browser not an app. But still, was fixed immediately after the port forwarding add on cable router/modem

A manually created port forwarding is more stable in most cases anyway.
So all good.

If your desktop is running Windows, I recommend you doing this:
