New windows player - 1 step forward, 2 steps back?

I’m glad to see the Windows store app gone - it has been abandonware for many years and definitely had issues.

However why not wait until this new player was on a feature par with the old one before releasing it? Apart from not being able to transcode before download, or choose the download location, the download options are less flexible now too.

I used to select “Unwatched, limit to 10 episodes” for a lot of shows. Now the “limit” has hardcoded values of 1, 3 or 5. I guess having “latest” is useful for some topical shows, but the number really needs to be split out:

[ ] All episodes
[ ] Latest episodes
[ ] Next (unwatched) episodes

Limit to ___ episodes

Why go backwards in capability?

Also, why is “sync” suddenly “download”? Is it because that’s what Netflix calls it? Will this change in all clients, and will they all be getting these new dumbed down options?

The “limit eps” functionality/bug is a known issue and will be addressed in a future update.

From the blog post:

We used to call it “Sync”, but now it’s just “Downloads” — a friendlier term that means it’s just a single click to take your favorite media with you, and you can find it all in one predictable place. It’s also built on a much simpler and more reliable mechanism, so downloads start quickly, and give clearer feedback along the way. It’s a bit of a sneak peek at the direction we’re headed with offline media across the board (including the mobile apps), so check it out and let us know how it works for you!

Yes.

Hopefully, they’ll get the bugs ironed our for a much improved user experience.
