All channels show as enabled and picked up by the HDHomerun but do not show in “on right now”.
eg. TVNZ1, TVNZ+1, Shine, HGTV and do not show even though they are enabled.
HD channels all show as SD.
The guide data for the channels seem to be outdated including the names of the channels (eg TVNZ2 matches to TV2).
TVNZ1 news at 6pm shows under news but TVNZ1 doesn’t even show under on right now?? Newshub for channel three doesn’t show under news programs.
Any chime in from plex would be great. I’ve brought some of these issues up in other threads but still no response from Plex.
I’m noticed that Australia guide data has been improved - any plans for NZ as well?
+1 Having very similar issues at my end. EPG data for some channels very inconsistent, yet showing up in the Freeview guide on my TV (assuming it’s loaded from the over-the-air source)
Yeah, I’d like to use it, but the poor quality guide limits it’s usefulness. I gather that even if I provide my own XMLTV file the issues are still present, correct?

Yeah i’ve tried an external xml file as well and pretty similar experience.
I have an HDhomerun on my Plex server on an Nvidia shield and a win10 pc.
I also are having trouble with listings. Most shows are there but masterchef Australia is not.
Is there some way I can record tv one from 8:30 to 9:00pm each night.
I can view the program live but it doesn’t show in my EPG yet on freeview it is all good.
The Chase at 5pm until the News at 6pm on TV one is the same.
TV One News shows up on Guide and I can record each night.
Is there anything I can do or can you add a manual record for each channel then at least I can record.
One thing that’s important to note is that what you see in Freeview isn’t directly related to what’s in the Plex EPG. Plex’s EPG comes from Gracenote, and so Plex can only display what they’re provided by Gracenote (where Gracenote get their data from, I’m unsure). I know there is ongoing work to improve the guides, but unfortunately, that’s as much as I know.
In saying that, if you do use an XMLTV guide that includes all the data required, then Plex will display it properly (I use XMLTV for my guide in Australia). However, if there is any news on improved guide data for New Zealand (or anywhere else in the world), I’m sure there’ll be an announcement made.
+1. Looking forward to any improvements that can be made to the NZ EPG. Not having popular shows like Masterchef is a deal breaker. Hoping to replace our TiVo with Plex DVR before the local TiVo service ends at the end of October.
I echo all the above. The EPG is definitely incomplete. A lot of Movies seem to show up as TV Shows as well. Also my EPG does not seem to auto refresh and I have to go click the refresh button which is a pain.
I really wanted Plex DVR to replace my Tivo when the service expires in a few months, but at present its not reliable. Not only is the EPG unreliable, but I have problems with recordings hanging, and bugs with recordings not being scheduled when you set the recording to start a couple of minutes early.
hey everyone - you probably may have already seen this post but just in case you haven’t - we now have a way to report EPG guide data that is incorrect or not showing properly and obviously for us Kiwi’s this is ALOT! hehe… Please head to the link and report your issues so we can try and get this sorted.
I’ve also noticed that with the apple tv live tv function now enabled that channels that were missing in plex web are on apple TV but with the program title as untitled??? Also no 5.1 audio on HD channels.

Suup fellow kiwi Plexors…
Having issues with streaming live tv… my network @ home’s pretty good… however it’s stuck on the circle and not loading…
What Tuner are you using? Which device are you playing the channel back on? What channels are you trying? It did the same for me on the HD channels (TVNZ1, TVNZ2, TV3) with my apple tv 4 as well but then tried it again a couple of times and it worked, albeit very slow to buffer it up. I’ve got cat6 gigabit network around the house which everything is hard wired into. My plex server spec’s are in my signature so not sure if this a plex problem or just my server isn’t fast enough.
Needless to say kiwis aren’t getting much love for the guide data and plex problems we are having at present. Hopefully we see some real improvement soon.
Channels app on the apple tv 4 along with the hdhomerun connect work flawlessly. Makes plex live TV look very, very bad.
Hi guys - I’ve got Plex media server installed on my Mac mini and was excited to learn about Live TV/DVR is now possible in NZ. Going by Plex’s webpage I have a choice between buying the HDHomerun or the TVButler USB stick.
Is the HDHomerun worth paying NZ$250 from nicegear.co.nz ? I suppose connecting via ethernet is preferable to a bulky USB stick, but I am completely unfamiliar with the SIliconDust brand - do they issue software updates etc that will keep the device useful for at least 5 years?
I’ve read other posts that suggest there are still issues to be ironed out with the EPG etc… Does this diminish the usefulness of investing in a DVB tuner at present?
I guess my overarching question may well be, is this all worth it for the poor quality programming we have in NZ? I agree certain shows are worth recording, but couldn’t care less about OneNews, 3 News etc., they are a waste of time.
I realise of course that this Live TV feature in Plex is only as exciting as the content we can receive over the air here in NZ.
Is there a way with Plex to somehow harness the viewing of live TV channels in the UK for example?

Hi Mark,
I use the HDHomerun connect and find it very very stable. They update the software from time to time and you can also use there beta software which I am currently using without any problems.
What plex clients will you be using to watch live TV? If you want a flawless product, I use an app called channels on my apple tv 4 and it works perfectly without any hitches and they update the app regularly. With the HDhomerun you can also download there view software which is available on a mac or pc to watch on your computer which works great as well. They epg guides for both of these services work sweet for NZ.
Plex on the other hand has a lot to work out for NZ users and TV/freeview. IMO it’s still unusable to get a good service from it.
I use a mac mini also for my plex server.
If you want to save some money on the HDHomerun you could get it from the UK (99 pounds) via amazon. Works out to be around $200 NZD shipped I think from memory. Its the same model (DVB-T) as we use here in NZ.
Hi Jay. Thanks for the quick reply.
I’ll be using the Plex client on my iPhone 6 for viewing anything live, but also have an Xbox One and a Chromecast, so will be able to use them to view recorded content.
I’m still on a 3rd gen Apple TV so haven’t been able to enjoy apps on the latest tvOS yet, but will be upgrading to the new Apple TV when apple releases it, which I expect will be in October, and will be 4K capable. I’ll definitely check out the Channels app then - great to hear something works well with NZ Freeview.
The HDHomeRun does sound like a solid product so will indeed look to get one from Amazon UK, thanks for the tip.

I have a Linux NAS…
Works really well and superfast… so not sure why this would happen.
It’s either transcoding and having trouble, network delays or something up with Plex and the tuner card.
However it’s a Plex supported tuner, even came with a 3 month plex pass.
There’s nothing else using my NAS, sits in my comms room powered on purely for Plex.

@HcoNmeM your setup looks fine, I think that the live TV in general is still very buggy. A lot of people are having problems with it playing it on various devices. Maybe post in the main DVR/Live TV forum with your issue and see if anyone else with your tuner has those issues as well. Hope you get it sorted.
