Newest Beta Dolby Vision Issue

Look I don’t want to get into insults with anyone, but if I’m honest HDR10 on the shield isn’t any where near reference either, you would think there is someone at ‘Nvidia’ that could tune the output to isf standards… it would be great if they could add some HDR10 and Dolby Vision patches in developer options so those of us with meters could take some measurements or try and cool it down a bit.

The frustrating thing with color and white balance is some people just dont see it, like frame judder, those of us that do see it it drives us mental.

Hey,

I am actually kind of astonished why theres nothing on the plex forum or even in this thread about it, but I encountered a very big delay of video output when I am playing Dolby Vision blu-ray rip MKVs on the Plex app on the Shield 2019 Pro.

I am using:
Shield Experience 8.2.1 (32.8.435.31)
PMS 1.20.4.3517
Plex 8.9.2.21619 (613cb8fd)
Audio Passthrough: enabled
Switch Framerate: enabled
Swirch Resolution: disabled
Wiring: Shield > AVR > TV (it is the same with Shield > TV > AVR, though)

What I observed playing them in the Plex App on my Shield Pro 2019 is that the video output is far later than the audio.

I have checked that against the same movie files played in kodi as hdr10. In Kodi the audio and video are in sync and the files I have got are in sync, too.
Also since sometimes the Plex app doesn’t trigger DV I observed that when it’s the same files in HDR10 “mode” the audio is in sync as it is in Kodi.

I also tried the costum ExoPlayer from MakeMKV forums and also got more video delay as if I play the files in kodi. But it is not as much delay as in the Plex app.

Further I checked how it is behaving within the Netflix app by using the provided Dolby Vision testpattern for audio delay (search for the series ‘testpattern’). It is in sync, so it is not a problem of DV playback of the Shield in general or something with the processing of the TV, I guess.

Does anyone have the same problem in Plex App? The video is like 100ms+ late compared to other media.

If somebody might want to check on their system, I am checking with a blu-ray rip of Spectre.
Theres a scene at around 2h6m where Daniel Craig shoots at a glass wall. There I can perfectly see that the muzzle flash is well behind the sound of the gunshot with Dolby Vision , whereas the actual same file without the DV triggered the muzzle flash and gunshot sound are right at the same time.

This is actually kind of driving me nuts, since otherwise I’d be happy to use the Plex app as my “central” app for movies and series.

As it is now, it is not possible for me to watch my MKV rips on the Shield due to the very noticeable video lag in ExoPlayer (and Plex app)

@sixones, can you confirm the version of the Shield Experience that Nvidia gave you to test that fixes the DV decoder issue?

Is it a later version than has just been release and was previously a hotfix?

Can you make me a sample that you can replicate the problem with? Is the delay a constant thing so the video and audio is always out of sync? Could you try disabling refresh rate and resolution switching and see if you still get the problem.

Could you grab the logs from the app? Will take a look and see if I can find why its crashing for you.

Thats the build I have, it fixes the non triggering of DV for me. Can you create a sample that isn’t always triggering Dolby Vision and we can take a look.

8.2.1 (32.8.435.31) is the build I have, the samples I have that were failing to trigger Dolby Vision and now triggering it everytime.

That is the build I have and I am still getting failures.

I tried Mission Impossible tonight which was ripped today. After about 7 attempts which either resulted in the TrueHD soundtrack and no video or LCPM 5.1 and HDR, but never TrueHD and DV, I gave up.

The bug is definitely not yet fixed whether it is Plex or the Shield Experience.

Can you create me a sample?

Yes, if I knew how…?

What software do I need to give you a sample from the MKV I have?

Instructions are available here, you can use the Plex Transcoder from Plex Media Server: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

Yeah, 8.2.1 also fixes it for me.

OK, that’s done. How do I send it to you?

Hi,

Here are the logs. In this instance the file was slow to load and reverted to HDR instead of DV and transcodes the audio from Atmos to DD+ even though Atmos works fine in my setup. Then the Shield became unresponsive. The video would badly stutter at times, but I could stop playback as none of the remote commands would work.

I saw the following in the logs also:

11-18 12:41:32.096 e: An exception occurred: com.google.android.exoplayer2.ExoPlaybackException: java.lang.IllegalStateException

If I see any more crashes with different messages I’ll upload them here.

Cheers.

Same here, still having plenty of issues with dolby vision triggering still on 8.2.1. Movies I tried that failed were black panther and angel has fallen. Both took 3 or 4 tries to get dv to trigger. Problem is definitely not fixed.

Agreed. I’m also having the same issue. I tried playing Transformers Age Of Extinction (new file) and Birds Of Prey (not a new file) both took several tries to get the DV trigger, both fell back to HDR10 and audio transcode. Both also fell back to no HDR10 once (badge showed “normal”). @sixones are you sure the fix was implemented in 8.2.1?

I have not experienced an audio sync issue at all, whether transcoding or not.

The DV triggering, I’ve tried with several movies and episodes (GOT) and always triggers DV. What I found as a repeating pattern in the past was that any new added title to the collection has triggering issues. I will keep and eye on it but I find it more solid now.

Just to add to this.

The DV files seems to load more consistently when played form the beginning. If trying to resume it will always revert to HDR with transcoded audio.

Hi,
thanks for getting in touch!

Well, it’ll be hard to give you a sample, since the content is copyrighted and I have not got any royalty free content that I could replicate that with.to rip and provide you.

The delay is constant, yes. Does not matter if I pause or skip back 10 seconds, or resuming in the middle of the movie.

I’ll try your suggestions and report back.

I’ve had mkv files trigger correctly from the beginning, and trigger correctly from a stopped resume point. And the opposite, I’ve had files that do not trigger correctly from the beginning, nor from a stopped resume point. I’ve also had files that are new exhibit the same random DV trigger behavior, as well as files that have previously triggered DV and played correctly.

I’ve gone days without having an issue, then suddenly several files won’t trigger correctly.

Since Shield Experience 8.2.1, there is a very long delay when starting a file, where the device is trying to decide how to play it. If the delay is 10-15 seconds, it fails DV.
