Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: 4.53.0
Discovered while updating a large number of my TV shows with posters from TPDb, and through troubleshooting on the subreddit in this post. I’m posting here since I couldn’t find a similar issue reported on the forum and would love to see a fix since I doubt it’s anything complicated.
Steps to Reproduce:
Open a TV show
Click the pencil icon next to a season, then go to the Poster tab
Add a new poster (using any method) → the poster will be uploaded but it won’t be selected (indicated with the yellow checkbox)
3a. However, the poster will still change to the newly uploaded one, which was why users think it worked.
Click save
Add a new episode for the show (doesn’t have to be for the season that you just changed the poster for) and re-scan the TV library → the poster for the season will revert back.
As a workaround you can manually select the poster after uploading, and then click the save button.
This doesn’t happen at the Show level, or for Movies or Collections. It only appears to be affecting seasons. A very frustrating realizing after updating all my season posters and then seeing them reset (especially for long running shows like One Piece or Law and Order).
This is my first bug post here, so please let me know if more information is needed or if this should be moved to a more appropriate location.
The old tv show metadata agents will very likely see no further bug fixes. Because there is a new tv show agent being developed right now. [BETA] New Plex TV Series Scanner
If you are using English as your metadata language, you could switch to this agent already. If not, I can’t recommend doing so, yet.
In general, I strongly advise you to place any custom posters as files into the folder structure of your media. Do not use the drag&drop/upload methods to upload posters in the plex web app.
Please see the documenation on where to place the files and how to name them:
Hi @OttoKerner - thanks for the reply! That was actually a suggestion I received on the reddit post. I made the switch but still experienced the same issue. It seems to be more UI related than scanner related, since uploading season posters doesn’t automatically select the new poster like it does for Shows/Movies/Collections.
Have you refreshed metadata for all series after switching to the new agent?
After doing so, the poster will be the default one, delivered by the new agent.
Unless the custom poster is already existing as a file, with the right name and at the right place beside your video files.
I’m not actually placing the poster images in my file system. I’m using the UI “upload” feature to change them (mostly with the URL function). Doing it this way isn’t a problem with the Seasons or Movies or Collections. And if I take the extra step of selecting the season poster after uploading then it is retained. It is automatically selected in Seasons or Movies or Collections after upload, so that seems to be the bug here.
I explicitly advise you against doing it this way.
Because even without this bug, if you ever have to rebuild your server, you’ll have to do all the work again with finding all the posters and pasting them into the library, one by one. If they were already present as files, the whole process would be painless and pretty much automatic.
If you are already using the new agent, please report this issue in the above linked forum thread for the beta test.
This is a good point I hadn’t considered. Is there any way to have Plex do the “hard” work for me by auto-adding the posters I upload from the UI to my fold structure with the correct name/format?
