It’s detecting your primary interface IP to be a WAN IP.

when this happens, you can’t claim PMS from the WAN IP.

Is the server remote or local ? It looks remote in a datacenter?

If so;

  1. SSH tunnel into it ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400 ip.addr.of.server
  2. Open your browser to: http://127.0.0.1:8888/web.

Your browser will now behave as if it’s on the console of the remote machine.

Yes, the server is located in Amsterdam in the data center.

It worked the same way until the Plex update via the WAN IP 94.75.211.138.

I am connected to plex via the ssh tunnel.

last time it was exactly the same problem it worked until an update came update was installed and then problems with remote connections and then troubleshooting for days and then an update came again and then it worked,

what can I do to make plex work normally?

We haven’t changed anything in the Remote Access code for a very long time.

One thing I do happen (rarely but does happen), the PlexOnlineToken in Preferences.xml gets a NULL value.

In a SSH command line session
If you want to stop Plex,
– Get into "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
cat Preferences.xml
– Look at PlexOnlineToken="" ← Make sure it’s not null.

If it is then we simply do a bit of editing and reclaim the server

To reclaim when it gets nulled.

  1. Using your favorite text editor

  2. PMS stopped

  3. Edit Preferences.xml

  4. Carefully remove the Name="Value" pairs for:
    – PlexOnlineUsername
    – PlexOnlineMail
    – PlexOnlineToken
    – PlexOnlineHome (if it exists)

  5. Exit and save the file with these now removed

  6. ls -la to confirm file ownership still matches as it should

  7. Start PMS and let it sit quietly

  8. Remain at the command line session

  9. make sure you have curl installed (not all distros include it by default)

  10. in your browser: http://plex.tv/claim

  11. It will give you a token. COPY that

  12. Back at the command line

curl -X POST 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/myplex/claim?token=PASTE_TOKEN_HERE'

It will sit for a minute while it negotiates a new token

It will then give you a short flood of XML. These are your server feature flags.

When this is done, The server is reclaimed AND PlexToken is again in your machine.

I have looked at the preferences.xml file there is a token not 0

I tried to claim but I get an error message curl is installed

MODERATOR EDIT Token image removed – Security

Please stop Plex.

Make a manual tar.gz of the “Logs” directory then attach the tar.gz

I did the following I removed the values for the entries and then I opened http://localhost:8888/web/index.html in the browser via the ssh tunnel and redid the setup process added media libraries and it just analyzed online I can also come remotely from Germany via the Plex app I’ll watch it once and see if it works It’s funny that the problems under Debian 10 really happen after an update not after every update I had installed 2 or 3 updates in the meantime there was nothing but with the last one yesterday it was like that again.
I didn’t do anything there either, just apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and then confirmed with Y and after restarting Plex it started.

You have more directories to watch than the kernel allows by default.

I recommend fixing this first. As you do this , each slot you’re going to allocate requires 540 bytes of memory + the path to the directory itself. (about 1500 bytes max)

After completing this, you’ll need to restart the host.

root@storage1:~# find /mp1/Movies /mp1/Series /mp1/Music -type d -print | wc -l
18235
root@storage1:~# echo fs.inotify.max_user_watches=262144 >> /etc/sysctl.conf
root@storage1:~# sysctl -p
fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 262144
root@storage1:~#
here once the output I have adjusted the value a little more generously because I will upload more and plan ahead I have 64 GB Ram that should fit.

what is also strange is that plex does not identify all movies in the folder for example James Bond I have all movies there but it only recognizes 3 movies from

Plex DocsYour MediaNaming & Organizing Your Movie Files

Follow Plex naming & organization requirements.

/movies <-- folder added to movie library
../GoldenEye (1995) <-- folder for each movie
..../GoldenEye (1995).mkv
../Goldfinger (1964)
..../Goldfinger (1964).mkv

Unfortunately, it doesn’t recognize the changes and even if I click on Refresh Media Library at the top, the spinning top only moves briefly and then stops.

I’ve only had this since the update.

Plex has now added the missing movies after several hours
