I am a bit of a novice with all of this. That being said, a year or two ago I created a plex server, have a lot of movies and tv shows on it and it’s excellent. I love it. Only my wife and kids use it. It’s been stable for a long time. This most recent update the remote access has completely cut out.
I don’t even really know how to approach this problem. I’ve looked at guides and troubleshooting and they talk about port forwarding and double NAT and a bunch of things that I have never needed to know and that have been irrelevant in my case. I’ve updated no firewall program, no anti-virus, nothing of that sort. I just updated, three days ago, the plex media server. That is the only thing that changed.
Here are the logs that I got from the troubleshooting area inside of plex itself. If someone can help me at least figure out how to start approaching fixing this if not outright fixing it, I would appreciate it so much.
The trouble with remote access is that it involves more than the components you do or don’t update in your own environment. It particularly involves components outside your immediate control, such as the technical configuration of how your ISP connects your router to their network and the internet.
I wrote this guide some time ago to help pinning down what might be causing the remote access issues in a specific setup. I’m not aware of any specific remote access issues with the Plex Media Server in general.
It isn’t suspicious at all that the exact moment that I hit update on plex is when my remote access stopped working? Seems unlikely my ISP also chose that exact moment to change their protocols.
That being said, thanks for the guide. It already feels a little overwhelming. I’ll look at this more in the morning when I feel more fresh. Right now all I see is a million things I’ll need to learn to get my computer doing what it was doing two days ago.
As a side note, is there a way to downgrade my plex server to a previous version? Asking for a friend.
I have been having the same issues, maybe 3 to 12 hours of good service then I need to restart. The weird part about it is that the last few updates had nothing to do with anything remote access related.
For anyone paying attention, I am having the same problem. I setup a new server a few weeks ago. Remote access more or less worked, but was a bit unstable at times. After the update, it will connect for 1-2 minutes and then drop outside connections. I have tried the manual port specification and port forwarding solve… which didn’t do anything. I am on Windows 10, and use PrivadoVPN. I have tried disabling UPnP and when that did not work, I re-enabled… still nothing. I have also used port forwarding via the Static NAT option on my router… still nothing. My servers IP is static. If it is a guide or a reddit response to this problem on page 1 of a google search looking for things related to “Plex Remote Access issues” I have read it all, and tried it all. Nothing. This seems to be an issue with the latest Plex release and user’s hardware in some instances. I went ahead and paid for the lifetime plex pass, and really hoping that I didn’t waste my money, if this doesn’t get resolved soon. Is there a way to report a bug to the Plex team?
Have you looked into the Remote Access Troubleshooting guide linked in this very thread? This should at least help you pin down where to find the bottleneck in your setup/configuration.
Have you tried using remote access with your VPN disabled?
The majority of those page-1 „bug reports“ turn out to be linked to a poor (missing) remote access configuration, changes/restrictions applied by an ISP or rather complex network setups (including but not limited to VPN use cases).
Having same issue with remote access. After initial problems with setting up remote access. It has been working well until recently. Now I am having to do a manual click on “Apply” button in remote access section to re-establish remote access. After doing this remote access returns until I check the next day.
Attempted to change my network on my Win11 PC from public to private & I hope this helps. I have a new PC & on my prior Win10PC, I didn’t have issues but since installing on here I’ve had intermittent remote access issues.
Just noticed that I’m having the same issues, I can literally sit there and watch it be fully accessible and the within a couple minutes it drops access. As I was typing this it was literally 15 seconds. I noticed this right after this last update. Clearly there is an issue somewhere
I’m not saying there can’t be a problem with Plex. But so far there’s been very little substantial feedback beyond „it’s not working“ or willingness to provide some basic troubleshooting input/feedback.
Based on experience over the last years, I still suspect some bad router configurations or changes on ISP side. Multiple users experiencing issues doesn’t mean their individual router config is beyond question… similarly restrictions applied by an ISP will usually impact lots of users at a time.
The on/off feedback (it’s only working for a period of time, stops working after some time) imply there’s some problem in the network configuration (e.g. using UPnP or no local IP address reservation).
I’ve offered to help several times in this thread or provided guidance on how to pin down the particular issues. So far all I’ve seen is „me too, this must be a Plex issue“ posts. There’s not much to work with (except perceiving those posts as troll postings… though I doubt most of the posters are actively trying to troll)
