Hi, I have an issue with some video that use DTS-HD MA 5.1 as track. On my TV the video has no sound. I tried to disable direct play and it doesn’t work anyway.
If audio is transcoding, enabling any subtitle format results in a video transcode.
Enabling PGS or VOBSUB subtitles results in a video transcode.
SRT/VTT subtitles direct play if the audio is direct playing.
ASS subtitles direct play if the Plex app is set to Burn Subtitles = Only Image Formats.
If Burn Subtitles = Automatic, enabling ASS subtitles results in a video transcode.
As you can see, the Plex webOS app is pretty limited when it comes to subtitles.
If you want to use the Plex webOS app, you’ll have to convert unsupported audio formats to a format that does not transcode (AC3, AAC). You’ll also have to find text subtitles on the Internet or convert PGS/VOBSUB to text format. All of that is doable but labor intensive.
An alternative is to use a streaming box/stick that handles subtitles better than the webOS app.
I do not know how the Apple TV 4K or Roku devices handle subtitles.
The Plex Android TV app direct plays subtitles even if the audio is transcoding. Depending on your requirements look at the Amazon FireTV Stick 4K or Nvidia Shield Pro.
The choice between the two (not considering cost) depends on your audio requirements.
The Shield will passthrough TrueHD, TrueHD+Atmos, and dts/dts-HD MA/dts:X to attached audio equipment that supports those formats. If you have a soundbar/receiver/etc that supports those formats, then look at the Shield.
The FireTV Stick 4K cannot passthrough those formats. TrueHD audio will be transcoded by the Plex server to AAC. dts formats will be converted by the FireTV stick to Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital Plus / or PCM depending on the attached audio equipment.
