Same problem for me; I’m a new (1 week or so in) Plex user still trying to get the set up how I want. Suddenly today, no music being played from the library yet the file appears to be streamed, the play counter continuing along as it should.
Edit: A restart on the Shield seemed to work. Briefly. Could hear the music but only for a handful of tracks and then same problem - no sound.

Same issue. Force closing Plex and reopening will temporarily solve the problem. Seems to happen every time I try to listen to music. Sound from other media in Plex works fine, as well as sound from other apps.
Also same issue. I have a brand new 2019 Shield Pro that was bought about 3 weeks ago. Updated to the latest firmware before doing any PMS setup. During the setup of PMS I ended up doing multiple resets because of all sorts of issues. Finally got it all working except then I go to test the music player and it’s not working with the same symptoms others have described here. 
Ditto. Force stopping Plex didn’t help. Required a power cord reboot.

@PlexDEV: why don’t you solve this problem that has been going on for several months and on all versions of android TV (nvidia shield runs on android TV).

I am also plagued with this highly annoying bug. I tried removing all my music and re linking to no avail. Please fix… I use it exclusively for playing my library of music
Ha! Almost got me for a lifetime sub and then I went to play music tonight after watching a movie with the family. A big nope on this one, I’ll enjoy free until you fix this dumpster fire of a bug that’s been going for years now after a quick google search. No thanx, lost $150.
I’ve had to move onto other less amateurish software in order to play music on my shield. 5 months and the plex dev team still cant figure it out? Maybe it’s time to move onto different companies? Does this team not have testers?
Furthermore, after trying to play music, I need to force quit the app in order for my other apps to work. 2020 and this app is having these issues?
No listed trouble shooting methods work, I’ve performed the reset on my shield but that was only a temporary fix. Literally stopped working after one use. I have 3 shields, it’s time for Plex to put it’s big boy pants on and either be professional and fix this or admit they don’t know how.
To think I was so close to getting a subscription. That would have been a big mistake!
I understand your frustration too! An up and coming alternative is Jellyfin which is opensource media center based on Emby. It’s not as polished as Plex, but basic things like playing music and movies work just fine.

I am also experiencing this issue. I basically used a work around. I play the music from my Android Phone via Chromecast. Bypassing the app altogether. It’s not ideal, but it’s functional.
This is friggin stupid! would have never bought the shield with Plex if I has known about all the bugs. I also have no audio when playing music from an external media folder, a USB drive that the shield sees, all the album covers meta data etc. are there just no sound!! Also will not play any music from amazon music until I restart. It seems if I try to play music within Plex, which doesn’t work…and then go back to Amazon Music, then Amazon wont play either. Have to restart then go directly to AMusic to get sound. Really this is just unacceptable…who do you get support from , Nvidia? Plex? Google? I’m confused.
For anyone having this issue, please try the latest public release of 7.28.0. This should now be fixed. Please report back if you still experience the Shield not playing music after waking up. Plex for Android
using 7.29.2.16071 version of plex and the same audio problem occurred.
Got the new shield TV yesterday, set up Plex, updated firmware blah blah and ran into this exact issue. Some music don’t have sound. They are all mp3 formats and play fine on a computer. What gives?
