Server Version#: 1.23.4.4805
Player Version#: 4.61.2
Was literally watching a TV show, skipped to the next episode (mid first episode) and got an error that it wasn’t accessible. I refreshed the browser and now, on ALL browsers (at least on LAN) I get “No content available” and when I go to settings on the client the server can’t be found. Restarted the Plex server, rebooted the PC (Windows 10) and saw that someone was streaming remotely and on LAN from a TV. I then fired up the Plex Windows app (I prefer the browser, long story) and IT WORKS.
I then think “okay, it must be fine now” but no, none of the browsers on network - have tested 3 PCs work, they all get “No content available” and can’t access the server. When I log in I do get the user choice screen, as I have several LAN users setup.
I’m completely at a loss as this makes absolutely zero sense to me. I’ve changed nothing (that I know of) as I was lying in bed watching TV at the time. During troubleshooting I did the following:
Restarted Plex server/service
Rebooted PC
Updated to the latest (I was 1 version behind)
Disabled/enabled remote access
Restarted the client PC
Restarted the client browers
I’m totally baffled by this - I found one post on Reddit where someone described the same from about a month back, said it just started working again but then stopped again with no solution or resolution.
I’ve found that if I access the server by logging into Plex.tv, I’m unable to access my content. I see the same type of errors described.
If I log in by directly accessing the server (192.169.XYZ.ABC:32400/web/) it loads fine. The only difference I see is the plex.tv login path loads the latest Plex Web version (4.61.2) while navigating to the specific server first loads an older version of Plex Web (4.59.2).
On the PCs that have issues connecting, if I use a Plex application instead there’s no issue, and it’s connected securely. So it seems the issue isn’t the server connecting to the Plex login servers or the PC connecting to the Plex servers, but something to do with the Plex Web application.
Either acknowledgement that this is being fixed in an upcoming Plex server version OR help troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated.
Is it expected that mobile clients can’t connect during this outage either, even when using a manual connection? Seems pretty ■■■■■■ that core functionality is completely dependent on a service outside of our control like this.
I get the “No content available” error on the browser but everything works just fine on mobile apps and my Roku, and when I run the Plex desktop from the server where it’s installed (a Mac mini).
If I connect via my server’s IP address it works just fine as well: it only fails when I try to access via plex.tv.
I have restarted the server and the client (web app, app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/). Still receive the error “No content available”
I cannot access it from any computer in my home, with the exception of the Mac mini running the Plex server (which is accessed via http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html#!/)
Everything has resolved for me too (original poster here) - can you access everything from a device on LAN using the LAN IP of the server instead of 127.0.0.1? You should be able to just fine - but if not perhaps that points us at another issue.
Who is your DNS provider? As a test, to see if that’s the issue, can you set your client’s and server’s DNS server to 8.8.8.8? That’s one of Google’s servers and is what I’m using, perhaps something in DNS hasn’t properly propigated to your provider, although that is pretty doubtful given the amount of time we’re talking.
Yes, I can reach the Plex Server using the Mac min’s (Plex Server) LAN IP on other local computers.
When I change the DNS to Google, I can access the Plex Server. Note: I only changed the DNS on my computer (not the Plex Server) and I could access it.
I use OpenDNS for Parental Control features of my router.
When I change the DNS to Google, I can access the Plex Server. Note: I only changed the DNS on my computer (not the Plex Server) and I could access it.
Yep, that’s what I was thinking, you have some kind of DNS issue as shared just above. What I’d suggest is setting your primary DNS to the one you’ve been using and set a second one to 8.8.8.8 (or you can use 1.1.1.1 as that’s CloudFlare IIRC) - that way you always have a fall back - I run piHole as my DNS server as it block 95% of ads before they even come to the PC as it blocks around 90 thousand domains with a list that updates weekly. That way I don’t get ads on ANY device including my smart TV, and family tablets and phones with no additional software.
I switched the DNS server on my router to my ISP’s, then opened plex.tv and everything worked (without having to go to the server’s IP address).
Then I switched it back to OpenDNS and it’s still working.
I had to do this on both Macs that were having the problem, which tells me the computers themselves were somehow caching the defective DNS information.
I started having the same issue ever since the DNS problems last week. The issue HASN’T been resolved. I have checked my settings, restarted my Plex server, router, checked all the settings, port forwarding, DNS, antivirus, etc and still content is not available outside my network. I have had Plex working perfectly fine for a year and all of a sudden no changes to my settings, hardware or software and it stops working. I can’t check any more as everything has been checked several times and there is nothing left to try. I am going to have to cancel my Plex subscription shortly and look for an alternative platform if it doesn’t start working in the next week or so.
That’s interesting-- I never had a problem accessing my Plex server outside my home network, it was only giving me the “no content” error when I tried to access it inside my network via the plex.tv URL.
I believe you when you say you did not change anything. I am just wondering if an upgrade changed the external access settings.
I did two tests: I went into my router (Netgear Nighthawk R7900P) & changed my primary & secondary DNS from OpenDNS addresses to one provided by my local ISP and immediately after applying the changes I was able to access my Plex server over LAN once again.
I then changed them back to OpenDNS addresses: 208.67.222.222 & .220.220 and the connection immediately disappeared again.
So I followed your advice and kept the OpenDNS 222.222 as my primary DNS but changed my secondary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and the local connection to Plex has reappared, and it APPEARS that my OpenDNS filtering is still working.
It does seem like more than a coincidence that when Plex Web changed to version 4.59 (I think), so many of us started having this issue after never having it before.
Is there some setting in my home network’s OpenDNS client that I need to change so I can have both Primary & Secondary DNS addresses the way they were?
