No Genre in Music Library

I just installed newest Plex Server (with Pass) and noticed, all information about music Genre gone.

I just noticed the same thing. All genres in my music collection are blank. Plex Pass here too.

I think another member found the solution:

Seems to be working for me. Refreshing metadata of entire library now.

Fetching Genre from local ID3 tags works. However, default Plex Music Agent should work too, but it doesn’t grab Genres.

It’s a known issue, I’ve filed internally. Once we fix, your library will automatically get the new data.

Did you also know, Plex is tagging the Artist Composer as the Album Artist?

The biggest problem is when you have classical music performed not by Chopin himself.

@beckfield ~ does that make sense to you? if so, want to coordinate with me with a sample to demonstrate?

If I understand what he’s saying correctly (I think he means ā€œComposerā€ when he says ā€œArtist Composerā€), it’s one of the issues that I mentioned in the feature request mentioned above. It’s one of the things that everyone is doing wrong, because they don’t support enough of the available tags. Musicbrainz’s style guidelines for classical music says:

ā€œThe Release Artist of a classical Release should include the writers (composers, lyricists, librettists) and performers featured on the front coverā€¦ā€

This, I think, tends to result in the composer being tagged as the Album Artist (in MB and other databases), rather than the orchestra or soloist (or all three, and you’ll need to parse them). That, in turn, affects what Plex and others pull from them.

This is the big conundrum where classical is concerned - something I mentioned in a thread a few years ago. I don’t know the solution, but I think it will be a big job for you guys. The ā€œRobustā€¦ā€ feature request is probably just the tip of the iceberg. The trick becomes ā€œWhen I have some albums that are Composer-centric, others that are Performer-centric (orchestra and/or conductor), others that are Soloist-centric (with or without accompaniment), and still others that don’t fit any of those, how do you design a system that presents all 3 4 in a usable way?ā€

I’m happy to coordinate. I have two copies of my Classical files, one tagged with the composer as Album Artist, so Plex will display them that way, and the other tagged more strictly according to the ID3 specs (Composer=ā€œBeethovenā€, Album Artist =ā€œBerlin Philharmonicā€, for example).

Yeah, Plex is basically ā€˜importingā€˜ the bad metadata practices of Musicbrainz here. ā€œComposerā€ is a separate field (at the track level!), abusing ā€œAlbum Artistā€ for it makes no sense. Just think of the thousands of classical albums with pieces from multiple composers.

I don’t know what it is, developers in this business seem extraordinarily creative in finding ways to shoehorn metadata in the wrong fields.
