No HD Channels found by WinTV Dual HD tuner on Nvidia Shield

Hello,

I have an Nvidia Shield with the new 5.2 Beta software and a new WinTV Dual HD tuner (purchased specifically as listed as being the only USB tuner supported for Live TV / DVR on the Nvidia Shield platform). Although the Shield does recognise the USB tuner and allows me to add it as a DVR device, when I complete a Full UK scan no HD channels are found. Has anybody encountered and resolved this problem?

To further highlight the issue as one of compatibility between the tuner and the Shield, when I scan for channels using the same antenna and tuner via the Hauppage software on a Windows machine, all of the HD that I would expect to receive are found and play without issue.

Apologies if this requested is in the wrong subforum but having looked around in both this one and the one for Nvidia Shield, it looked like this one contained most issues highlighting problems with tuners.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can you post your Plex Media Server and Plex Tuner Service logs? Easiest would probably be to just goto Help > Download Logs in the Server UI and attach it here.

Hi Keithah - thank you for your reply.

I have attached the logs as requested and have also (hopefully) attached some screenshots showing that whilst the scan is running the tuner finds far more channels than are shown when the scan completes. This could be a red herring as many of them might be encrypted channels or just not available in my location.

Please let me know if I can provide any further information to help get to the bottom of it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am also having a similar issue. I have a Hauppage WinTV SoloHD tuner plugged into my Linux Plex Media Server. I have installed the drivers and Plex recognises the tuner no problem. However, when it scans for channels it finds nothing at all. I know the antenna cable is good as I get loads of channels and crystal clear picture on the TV using the same cable. I have attached my logs if it helps anyone.

Thanks

I’ve got the same issue with the tuner on the Shield, I plugged the tuner into a laptop and set up Plex with it and the HD channels appeared when scanning the same as I did on the Shield server

Anybody able to make anything from the logs posted in the second post? I have also now confirmed that I receive all of the HD channels available to me when using a HD HomeRun Connect (borrowed from a friend) and the same input signal. Despite being listed as the only USB tuner compatible with the Shield, I need to know if this is ever likely to work for HD channels before the period within which I can return the WinTV DualHD expires.

Any help greatly appreciated.

So when you use the HD HomeRun Connect with PMS, PMS correctly lists all the HD channels that were missing from the WinTV Dual? I’m just clarifying if you are finding the channels with the HDHR on its own or if you are using it through pms? Either way, it’s good information, Thanks!

Thanks Williami. Yes, the comparison of the channels returned was through the PMS DVR setup section for both devices. The only testing that I have done outside of PMS was to confirm that the WinTV Dual HD tuner does find (and plays) HD channels through it own software on a Windows platform.

If there is anything else that anyone can think to try/test, please let me know and I will post the results.

Thanks

Hi Jibidibo. I also just received a WinTV duel to use on the Shield as it is the only USB option available to us here in the UK. After 2 hours of playing and testing I am also unable to get the Shield / Plex to show any of the HD channels we all know are there on Freeview. In fact after scanning it says it found about 138 channels in South London but only offered me 80 something.

I have to say the entire set up process was dreadful having to manually assign EPG data to channels and while I know it is still a ‘beta’ the user experience is simply dreadful. I liked the idea of an all in one box solution but if this is what is offered then I would rather pay Sky £5 a month to keep the record features of my HD box with all the freesat channels.

My WinTV is already packaged up ready to be returned less than 3 hours after delivery! That really says something about just how bad it is right now - I don’t even see it as worth hanging onto for as Plex improve things. I just don’t think it will. I regret my Lifetime pass purchase more each time I open my Shield to be honest as there is always something flaking out.

I’m also having the same issue with a dual hd/ shield. All sd channels work, but no hd are tuned. Has anybody figured this out yet?

https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/276365/uk-no-hd-channels-freeview-hauppauge-dual-hd-dvb-t2-linux See this thread i created, if you want further info.

Basically when plex is scanning the frequency range it is only checking for DVB-T, not DVB-T2. Hence no HD channels. When i run other tools eg dvbv5-scan i will get the HD channels being returned.

to be clear i am having this issue on linux, not on a shield, the experiences seem identical

Have also replied on your other thread, but up to this point has this issue actually been acknowledged by the Plex devs? Seems a bit of a miss sell in the recent release / announcement by Plex regarding the shield tv…

Conversely, is anyone aware if others have got this combination working, so is this an issue across the board with this tuner, or just some individuals?

@Benniwood I am not aware of anyone that has got this combination working. As yet. Still waiting on a fix from plex or even confirmation that it is an issue.

@keithah Hi, is there any update on this issue yet? Seems like lots of people have the same issue with the Hauppauge tuner and the shield tv…

Hi guys, and further update on this issue?

As others have said, I am seeing no HD channels returned from the channel scan in the dvr set up in Plex using the WinTV Dual HD tuner.

When I connect the same tuner to a pc. The HD channels are there, so it is not a reception issue.

I have also managed to get hold of an HD Homerun tuner which I have plugged into my network, and that also shows up the HD channels. So it seems specific to the Plex set up with this tuner.

Any further insights from the Plex team would be greatly appreciated.

Just to add, as the other user states above, while the channel scan is in progress, it is picking up a large number of channels, so it looks to me like these are being picked up by the tuner, but then somehow filtered out of the channel scan result by Plex. Have attached a screenshot of this below.

Also attaching logs…

I am also experiencing the same problem with this setup;
Nvidia Shield TV 5.2(24.28.403.173),
Plex Version 1.7.2.3878,
Hauppauge WinTV-dual HD 1590.

I cannot select any HD channels after the scan. I have had success with the HDHomeRun Connect tuner using the same aerial. I was able to view all the HD channels with the HDHR.

I now have HD working for linux. The latest version from here https://github.com/b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-media-tree-kernel-builder
I am using the 4.10 flavour. I have both tuners working, and HD recordings. DVB-T2 works
Many thanks to https://github.com/b-rad-NDi

This may help the shield ??

I have channnels in linux, but no channels in windows…
Please solve asap…
