No Items in This Library

After the recent server upgrade my library just disappeared. The mobile app says “No content on Server” and when I look at the dashboard on the server it says "No Items in This Library ". System has been running for years without issue. No hardware changes or other problems but the library is gone.

I tried:
-dropping the folder from the Movie library and adding it again. Oddly, when I add the folder to the library it scans through the names of the files
-rebooting the server
-logging out of Plex account on server/client and in again
-verifying the media files are there and playing in explorer

Really strange – seems like it must have something to do with either the Plex or Windows updates that installed this week.

Any ideas? Is the only path to uninstall and start over?

Thanks for the help. The database was not corrupted but this helped me to track down the problem…

I restored an older database file and all the media assets properly showed in the library… Well, that was until I tried updating the library to add the new items that were not in the older database… After the scan, all the items were gone again…everything had been deleted!! At this point, I was completely frustrated so tried moving the library to a local share on the Plex Server Machine itself–previously everything was on the Synology NAS. After copying the files–SLOW–I again updated the library and presto they were all back again…

After a bunch of hunting on the Synology site, I learned there is a BUG with Windows 10 Fall Creators update that prevents it from properly doing SMB 2 or 3 directory scans on a Synology NAS. In other words–Plex can’t scan the directory of media assets on the Synology NAS because of this new Windows bug. This is not a Plex only problem but something that people know needs to be fixed by either MS or Synology. It explains why the problem started this week—with the release of the Fall Creators Update.

The workaround is to make sure you enable legacy SMB1 (slower and less secure) on Windows machines until the bug is fixed.

Thanks…for helping me head down a better troubleshooting path.

Interesting. Which NAS? I’m running Synology DSM 6.1 Update 8 — also acting as the Master Browser.

Prior to the Fall Creators Update/DSM Update 8, everything worked with the SMB 1.0 client disabled. Now, I can make it work/not work by turning on / off that setting on the PC running the Plex server. There is some talk on the Synology forum that the SMB 1.0 problem may have materialized with DSM Update 8 which came out about two weeks ago. Not sure.

Thanks for engaging…

You and me both!!! Feel free to disable the SMB1 client and see if you experience the same lovely problem. Make sure to backup your database before letting the library update though!

Same thing happened to me and has been happening for a while now. In Windows, Control Panel, Programs and Features, turn windows features on or off, I turned on SMB Direct. This seems to have sorted it for me. SMB v1 is disabled by default, can turn this on if needed. I have SMB v1 turned off on my Synology.

I have done a manual scan on each of my libraries multiple times and it has not removed any shows or movies.
