No media servers found - PS3

So I have had a Plex Media Server up and running for 6+ months and all has been well.

I have 2 PS3s in the house and they have been accessing the server via DLNA.  I configured my firewall so that I can access the server remotely via PCs, phones and tablets, and as I have said earlier everything works great.

The one thing that I really wanted was to have a nicer interface on the PS3s, so I decided to go ahead and try the Plex Pass for a month and if all went well longer.

I purchased the pass yesterday and when I try to use the Plex app on either of the PS3s I get a screen that states that there is no media servers found.  The screen also suggests to go to https://help.plex.tv/noserver and to try the troubleshooting steps there.  I have done this and am still plagued by the issue.

If I go into my plex server on the Devices page I can see that both the PS3s are there.  If I go to the server-->General area I can see that yes I am signed in, and the Remote Access area has a little green check and says "Fully accessible outside your network".

I am really confused because even though the Plex app on the PS3 fails to see the media server I can still watch videos via the DLNA section.  Also I have a friend that connects to my Plex server remotely using his Roku.  Everything works except the Plex PS3 app, and that is the whole reason I purchased the pass.

Thanks,

Troy

The exact same thing is happening with the PS4 app. Check the thread on the main page of this sub-forum. There seems to be no answer/solution to it, rather than it being a fault with the current version of the app (as this wasn't an issue before for PS4 users).

@gv87: I'm not too sure what you're referring to, have any extra context to share?

@troy: welcome to the forums. Thanks for posing your question very well and covering the typical trouble shooting stuff already. Super appreciated!

The PS4 app works with our website to connect the device with the server. I checked out the connection information we have. It looks sound, I can't spot any of the usual suspects.

My mental checklist, these all true?

  • You can access the server from the PS3 using DLNA - the PS3 and server must be on the same network.
  • Other devices on the network can access the server - the server must not have a firewall, or the firewall is setup to allow TCP traffic.
  • Your friend can connect to the server remotely - the server must be signed in.

Maybe:

  • Our website isn't showing me that you have activated any PS3 devices. Perhaps you deleted them all while debugging?
  • Could it be you're signed into plex.tv as a different user than is signed into the server? I see one a @hotmail.com and a @yahoo.com email addresses on your account. Let's confirm your entering the PIN when signed into plex.tv as the @hotmail.com account.

Any change or new information?

That's the thread I'm referring to. There seem to be a number of us who had this problem occurring recently (with the newest version of Plex App on PS4). We have checked everything that's recommended, from devices, to logins, routers and network settings. We are yet to find a solution. Plex also worked for us before version .27 and still does with everything else besides the PS4, which points to it being a fault with the current version of the app rather than anything at our end.

I'm currently using my Xbox 360 for plex while waiting for the next version of the app on PS4, suspecting the problem will likely solve itself in the near future. As it stands, my PS4 recognizes the PMS being on about twice a day, and loses its connection in about 30 minutes after I start using it on the console.

@mseeley

Thank you for your reply.  Here is more detailed information. (and attached are some pretty pictures)

Today, I decided to start all over.  I deleted the device from my Plex server and uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my PS3. (I am only going to focus on one of the PS3s as the issue appears to be the same on both of them) Oh and there was an update for the Plex server, so I installed that.

In the attached file "ps3Issues.rar" you will find images to show you what I am seeing.

I launched the PS3 Plex app and was directed to go to the website and enter the pin:

(see pinActivated.png)

The PS3 then took me to an account selection page that has my 2 home users "C" (The Admin account associated with the @hotmail.com address) and PS3 the account that I created so that the PS3s could access the libraries.

(See accountSelection.png)

If I select the "C" account and enter my pin I get the "No media servers found" and requested to restart the servers and verify that they are signed in and it shows the Server Name.  (Which I did)

(see accountC.png)

If I select the PS3 account I get the "No media servers found" and requested to restart the servers and verify that they are signed in and it shows the Hotmail email address.  (Which I did)

(see accountPS3.png)

I logged on to the server and Launched Plex from there to verify settings.  On the Web->General page I verified that the server is up-to-date.

(see webGeneral.png)

Then I checked the Server->General page to verify that I am signed in.

(see serverGeneral.png)

Then I checked the Server->Remote Access page to verify that the server can connect to your servers.

(see remoteAccess.png)

Next we have the Users->My Home page that shows the 2 users

(see homeUesrs.png)

Finally we have the Devices page as you can see the PS3 has checked in

(see devices.png)

Now on to answer your questions:

- You can access the server from the PS3 using DLNA - the PS3 and server must be on the same network

- - Yes both PS3s have no issues connecting and viewing videos via DLNA.  All systems on my Home Domain are on a 192.168.0.0 network.

- Other devices on the network can access the server - the server must not have a firewall, or the firewall is setup to allow TCP traffic.

- - Yes all other devices can access and view videos with no issues 2 Tablets and 3 Phones.  (The phones can access the server locally on the 192 network or remotely through the internet)

- Your friend can connect to the server remotely - the server must be signed in.

- - Yes he can access the server fine using his iPad and Roku device remotely

Maybe:

- Our website isn't showing me that you have activated any PS3 devices. Perhaps you deleted them all while debugging?

- - I did delete them but, from the images you can see I added it back today for testing (see devices.png)

- Could it be you're signed into plex.tv as a different user than is signed into the server? I see one a @hotmail.com and a @yahoo.com email addresses on your account. Let's confirm your entering the PIN when signed into plex.tv as the @hotmail.com account.

Any change or new information?

- - No I am signed into plex.tv under my Hotmail account (see pinActivated.png)

Thanks,

  - Troy

Hi, I am having this same problem.   I am running plex media server v. 2.4.4 on fedora 14.      The PS3 and plex server are on the same subnet.   After I pin the PS3, I get the "noserver" error message.   I am signed in with my plex pass account on the server.  The plex server remote access is enabled and is "fully accessible from outside your network".    I can ping the PS3 from the plex server. I can see the plex server via dlna on the PS3, and play movies.

I am also able to use the plex app for android to stream to my phone and tablet, all on the local wireless/same subnet as PS3 and plex server.

I am willing to provide any additional troubleshooting info necessary.

@mseeley

Any updates on this, or are there any other things you would like me to do?

I had the exact same issue with my ps3. What I found was that my folders i had shared over plex was to large which made plex on the ps3 fail. If you share less on your plex server the issue will be solved. Not really solved but atleast I can play my content now.

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/148338-an-error-occured-make-sure-server-is-online/?fromsearch=1is the link to one of my posts. Also shows my share size at the time.

Thanks for the info, however I don't think that the size of my folders.  I only have about 125 movies and 20 Season One of TV Shows.  I would hope that Plex wouldn't have issues with so small a load.

But as my library grows I will defiantly keep what you are saying here in mind.

Just an update,

So today I noticed that there was an update for both Plex and the PS3 (Not the PS3 Plex App)

Plex Server Version: 0.9.12.3

PS3 Plex Version: 2.4.10

PS3 Version:4.75

Unfortunately the issue remains.

We made an update in 2.4.10 to make connecting easier for everyone _but_ PS3. Basically, on supporting devices, we will try more as many addresses for each server as possible. Currently on the PS3 we do some filtering to limit the number of local IPs checked. We ran into startup issues on the PS3 because of how it handled network connections and use the filtering to cut load.

Unless something unforeseen happens our next release will bring the same change to the PS3.

(If that change doesn't fix you're case then we're definitely confused too)
