No native DVD support?

Don't want to sound critical on my first post, but am curious why PMS doesn't deal very well with the files ripped directly from DVD's?

Just finished setting up a little NAS4free server, moved all my ripped Music, DVD, and video content to it, then installed PMS on the little guy.  By the way...kudos to elan and the other developers for making the FreeBSD version available.  All my music files...no problem.  All my personal movies...no problem.  All my ripped DVD..."Cannot load M3U8: 404 not found" error.

And this in my log:

Aug 31, 2013 18:23:37 [0x80812a000] DEBUG - Content-Length of /mnt/Movies/Act of Valor/ACT_OF_VALOR/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO is 30720.

Aug 31, 2013 18:23:37 [0x807ced800] ERROR - [Transcoder] http://127.0.0.1:32400/library/parts/122/VIDEO_TS.IFO: Invalid data found when processing input

Aug 31, 2013 18:23:38 [0x807cee000] ERROR - Failed to start session successfully.

A few searches later and I found this post and this post.  And then ran across this Plex FAQ:

VIDEO_TS (as well as ISO, IMG, dvdmedia, and other "disc image" format) content is generally not recommended as it is not compatible with most Plex clients and usually can't be streamed.

Is combining my entire Movie library into a single VOBs and/or MKDs my only option?  I would prefer not to lose the menus contained within the native DVD files and file structure.

Either I missed something in my setup that is causing my problems, or I am trying to use a file and file structure that is not supported by PMS.  If the native DVD structure is not supported I am just curious as to why?  Can any of the developers educate me as to why this is so?
