No Response message when trying to play from thumbnail

Hello all,

This might be a known issue, so forgive me if it is.

I am currently using iMovie Theater as the app for PC. One issue I have noticed is that I cannot highlight a thumbnail of a media file and press the play button on the remote to play it (not sure if this is known as "direct play" or not, have a reason it might be, but don't want to specifically say that unless it's something else).

I get a no response from plex server message. I have to highlight the thumbnail, press enter, get the info screen (rating, media type, play, subtitle and trailer items appear on the screen), and then select play from there.

It's not a major issue, just means two clicks instead of one, but thought I'd mention it in case no-one else has done so.

I am using Plexconnect with iMovie Theatre and the Play button does work in the situation you describe. I select a thumbnail, press play and the movie starts loading.

Logs?

And no, this is not "direct play". Direct play -> the PMS transcoder isn't doing anything. Your client is handling all the replay by itself.

This compares to "direct stream" (codecs are ok, but container is wrong...) and "transcoding" (PMS has to decode the audio/viode information, then encode it again...).

I should state that I haven’t updated Plexconnect since Dec 19th.

I am not aware of any major change since Dec19th... I guess we only stamped the release number. :-D

Ah yes, logs, that might help.

Let me know where I can find it / them, and what debugging level you want (and how to set it to that) and I'll get them for you.

I'm on this commit "1142cab 32 hours ago iBaa v0.3.1"

Sorry about the confusion over mentioning Direct Play, see, I knew it wasn't what I thought it was :D

Settings.cfg: loglevel=High

Logs are - if not defined otherwise - in the PlexConnect directory.

Attached is zipped version of the log file (was 14MB uncompressed, so Pastebin didn't like it)

I went into iMovie Theater, then into Movies and On Deck, highlighted "City Of Ember" from the top-most list, and pressed play. Saw the "No Response from Server" message.

It does not seem to happen for all movies, as another I tried (not in the log, sorry, had small child wishing for my attention) with the same steps worked.

If I highlight the movie, click enter; which brings up the information screen for the movie, and then click Play from there, it WILL play. So it's as if it's something with just playing from the thumbnail

If you need any more logs / info / whatever please just as and I'll try to get them to you as soon as I can

>> City of Ember

Hm. In the log the first movie played was Batman something... which died after about 4sec of streaming. Could you check PMS logs for the reason?

>> small child

Winnie the Pooh? :-)

From my perspective I wasn't able to find an issue in the logs. Could you please restart PlexConnect, then ONLY do those steps to recreate the failure? Stop PlexConnect once you see the "unavailable" message - don't go back - and grab the log.

When restarting PlexConnect you have to MENU out of trailers/imovie all the way to the top... otherwise it will be confused by "unknown" aTV/servers.

I bet I forget to kill the log while messing around with trying to figure out which movie did / did not have the problem. The death after 4 sec was likely me seeing that it had actually started to just play and then backing out.

Ok, I'll try and get the log for the exact conditions required, might be a day or so depending on when I can get laptop in front of TV (iMac is in the basement, ATV is in living room, so requires running around, or VNC from a PC laptop to the iMac!)

Thanks!

or... run PlexConnect on your PC laptop?

Now there is an astounding idea!

I followed the steps requested and here is the log. I hope it's useful. It does seem if I get this error, then press menu to get back up to the movie listing and then highlight the file and hit play again, it will then play ok. Weird

Log looks good at a first glimpse... are those "bad" files stored on a different drive? Maybe on an external, that does spin down for sleeping?

They are on an external. However all the files in the Movies and TV sections are all on the same drive, thus one that works and one that does not are on the same drive.

Drive is not set to spin down, and yes, it is successfully mounted
