Plex server will not install and it’s making me crazy

Nothing I do will get the plex Media server to install. I have deleted everything plex in my pc and it still say’s previous installer data found without uninstallstring. Where?!? I’m gonna lose my damn mind!

Do you know what specifically you deleted? The instructions here go over everything you need to do to completely remove PMS from your system.

Outside of that, the only other possibility I can think of is if you’re running Windows and running into an issue mentioned here: Windows: Errors trying to upgrade, install, or uninstall Plex Media Server | Plex Support.

It kept saying I didn’t have the uninstallstring. I deleted all folders and completely cleaned out the registry of all plex items. There is nothing plex in my registry.

Can you share a screenshot of the error you’re seeing? And a broader picture of what you did before attempting to install would be helpful as well. Are you saying that you previously had Plex installed, then at some point uninstalled it, and when trying to reinstall it you’re getting an error? And during that process you started manually digging around attempting to delete anything Plex-related from your system?

I was trying to update the server, it said it needed to uninstall, then it said the uninstallstring was missing and couldn’t continue. I had no idea what to do about that so I deleted everything plex, even downloading software to find and delete all traces. Still didn’t work. Then tried a system restore to April 14, earliest one available. Plex was back but didn’t work, also updating still said missing uninstallstring. So I went through deleting everything again. I’ll send a screen shot when I get home. I’ve been going nuts for three days now trying to fix it.

Are you trying to install the 64 or 32 bit version?

I think if you go from 32 to 64 bit everything happens automatically. It removes the 32 bit and installs the 64. If you go from 64 to 32 bit you have to uninstall that first

I don’t think I’ve ever been asked to uninstall anything during an update on Windows

Look at the support article posted previously. Near the very bottom of that there is a link to Microsoft’s troubleshooter tool. Install and run that. That should help.

Plex

Both of these things have been deleted and still nothing…
Delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc. registry key.
Delete the following directory: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

plex2
Still won’t install and giving me the same problem.

It’s the 64 bit on Windows.

Save this as a .reg file and import it into your registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E6CC95C0-5DFD-4A85-A79D-69CE4DFE7600}]
"UninstallString"=hex(2):4d,00,73,00,69,00,45,00,78,00,65,00,63,00,2e,00,65,00,\
  78,00,65,00,20,00,2f,00,49,00,7b,00,45,00,36,00,43,00,43,00,39,00,35,00,43,\
  00,30,00,2d,00,35,00,44,00,46,00,44,00,2d,00,34,00,41,00,38,00,35,00,2d,00,\
  41,00,37,00,39,00,44,00,2d,00,36,00,39,00,43,00,45,00,34,00,44,00,46,00,45,\
  00,37,00,36,00,30,00,30,00,7d,00,00,00

Ok, I did that. Plex still won’t install.

Hmm. The only other thing I can think is to do the advanced steps mentioned in this following article.

Scroll down to the section for Log Files. Start at the paragraph just above that on how to find the installer logs then see exactly what is failing and then continue to the next steps in that article to remove that specific component.

Use the troubleshooter to find an app called “stop plex” or “stopping Plex” or something like this. Uninstall it.
Then reboot Windows and try again to install Plex server.

There is nothing called Stop Plex listed.

Looks like you are trying to install a 64-bit version on-top of the 32-bit version and it’s not working for some reason. I have not seen this issue before. Can you go ahead and download and install the latest 32-bit version to see if that works. If so, then you can install the 64-bit version over the 32-bit version.

Thanks, I’ll try that when I get home. Thought I always had the 64.

I was able to install the 32 bit but it still says no uninstallstring when trying to put the 64 bit. As long as I can use Plex I’m happy though.
