Nord VPN and remote access

Just wanted to see others experience using a VPN and gaining Remote access. Any luck?

Haven’t done it but this should help you if you happen to run pfsense:

The article references PIA but it should be applicable to NordVPN.

Awesome. I’ll tweet it a bit and give it a go. Thanks

Have you had any success get remote PMS access with Nord VPN active?

I have been a longtime PlexPass subscriber and NordVPN subscriber. I have only been able to access my server indirectly due to the lack of Port Forwarding on NordVPN. I was actually thinking of switching VPN providers (IVPN maybe?). Then today (Dec 7 2018) - I see this email from Plex saying that they have partnered with NordVPN to bring us a discount. Does this mean that there is some sort of a technical partnership going on to resolve our long-standing issues or is it just a commercial partnership that that has no impact on the interoperatability of the two services? Any thoughts from my fellow sufferers?

I also saw the email today - for me it seems strange to partner with a VPN option that then ‘breaks’ some of the best features of Plex. I’m both a Plex pass user and have a NordVPN annual subscription and have been unable to resolve remote access:( really disappointed, tried many of the offered solutions in the forums but with no luck!

I am running Plex Media Server (PMS) on a Windows 10 Pro desktop PC, and store my media on a parity-type storage pool, which works very well and is easier to deal with (add/remove disks, thin-provisioning, etc.) than a hardware RAID array. I signed up for NordVPN this summer, and couldn’t get my PMS accessible remotely.

I became very busy with work and other things for a couple months, and by the time I realized there is NO workaround to get PMS accessible using NordVPN on the same Windows server, it was too late to cancel NordVPN. I ended up running Linux on a Hyper-V VM within Windows that has only PMS running on it, which is a major pain in the butt (Windows updates breaking file shares and virtual ethernet adaptors, etc.).

I saw this email from Plex advertising the deal for NordVPN, and I’m curious, does Plex not realize NordVPN is incompatible? I highly recommend anyone looking at VPN to choose another (it seems Private Internet Access is one of the very few likely legit VPNs that does allow port-forwarding and PMS to function on an otherwise protected machine). I’d like to hear from Plex staff on this.

I second this, I just signed up NordVPN from the Plex email thinking it worked with Plex. Very upset that it doesn’t. I hope we hear back from the Plex staff SOON!

It’s Weird to recommend something that hasn’t been fully tested with your product. Sounds like the left hand doesn’t know what the right is doing.

+1. This advertisement/partnership is odd. Plex wont run through NordVPN currently. I understand that Plex runs SSL, but we are trying to bypass the VPN with plex only, leaving the rest of the traffic from the host PC/device going through the VPN.

Did the exact same thing. Total dealbreaker for me, but didnt find out in time for a refund.
With this collab going on, one could hope its in the works.

I also tried NordVPN and bailed immediately. I now use ExpressVPN, better speeds and guess what… Remote access works like a dream!

You can do this with ExpressVPN

nord does not support port forwarding, ive talked with nord techs on the matter and they dont have a fix for it at the moment but are aware of the issue.

Just chiming in to hopefully bring more attention to this issue. I have been using Nordvpn for over a year and have been looking at alternative providers as I end up having to turn VPN off for remote viewing.

I love that they are offering discounts, but a partnership with a company that doesn’t play well with them makes no sense to me. I got Nord well before the partnership so I can’t really complain, but I would be very unhappy if I got this through Plex and it ended up not working together.

Hoping this partnership leads to some kind of fix in the near future.

Same issue with Plex and Nord.
I tried the PIA article mentioned by climber455, but without succes. I’m wondering if the setup article on PIA (referenced in the article), maybe has some differences to the NordVPN pfSense setup guide.
If someone had better luck, please share!

I’m having same problem using Plex remote access since installing NordVPN. I travel very often and really must have Plex remote access.

My work around is to use only the browser extension of NordVPN.

If I occasionally lose remote access to Plex I re-enable by having my NordVPN browser extension ON. Then navigate to web portal https://plex.tv/web and launch.

Maybe this method will help you.

Any update on this. I was about to sign up for 3 years of NordVPN until I read this thread.

I’m currently running PMS Version 1.14.1.5488 on a Windows 10 machine with NordVPN running on my router with no issues with remote access. I am using Asuswrt-Merlin on the router. I have PMS on a seperate PC and have it tunneling under the VPN, but I had to add a Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP for the plex to get it to stop being finicky about showing up all the time. But since I did that, no issues at all.
