Not finding TV show metadata

Hi there, I saw that the latest PMS update allows for native “DVD order” sorting and wanted to test it out. I followed the steps outlined and ended up losing all metadata associated with the two shows I tested (Firefly and Arrested Development). I completely removed those shows, did the Plex Dance, added them back, no metadata. It matches them (with TVDB or Movie Database, I tested both), shows a single poster for all seasons, no description, and the episodes are all just titled “Episode 1”, “Episode 2”, etc. I deleted the entire TV show library, did the Plex Dance, and added just those two shows for testing. Same results. Please help!

Out of Compliance:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

E:\ServerFolders\Videos\TV Shows\Firefly\S01E01 - Serenity.mp4

  1. you don’t have a Season Folder
  2. none of your episode names have The Show Name
  3. you’re using MP4 files (possible issue - read on)

Should be:

E:\ServerFolders\Videos\TV Shows\ <— we’re going to assume that’s your TV Show Library - it better be.
…Firefly
…Season 01
…Firefly - S01E01 - Serenity.mp4
etc

If you want anything approaching reliability Compliance is the only way to get it. Anything else produces unpredictable results or as in your case - don’t work.

FileBot (link in my signature) can handle that for you automatically or manually in seconds.

What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure (you don’t have any of those yet), but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Show and Movies here:

Just drag LMA to the bottom of the list and drop it.
If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.

Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you’ll need to write a new bundle for the show so The Plex Dance® was invented:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show from library - yep, the whole thing
  2. update library
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— update library, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance, move LMA, etc
  6. replace corrected show into library
  7. update library

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

Do that with Firefly and it should come right in where it needs to be.

I can see that you set the DVD order, but after that is a poker game and you may be losing.

Thanks for the reply. I did exactly as you said (with Firefly), all steps in order. I corrected the folder structure and filenames. I didn’t clear the metadata from the files but they’re all put in by myself, correct episode names, and they’re not what’s showing up. Anyway it didn’t solve the problem, they still show up as “Episode 1”, “Episode 2”, no descriptions. New logfile attached.

I would strip all the metadata from MP4/M4V files, or at least Move Local Media Assets as described above. Plex/MP4/Local Media Assets is a recipe for a straight-jacket.

Plex Dance® afterwards.

You need LMA for subs, local artwork, extras, etc., but it doesn’t need to have tip-top priority. Leave it checked, but move it to the bottom of all your Agents for Movies and TV Shows - and stop putting metadata in your files.

I dragged LMA to the bottom of all the TV lists (I use it for movies because I prefer my own title and genre tags). Moved the folders out of the library, updated, did the Plex Dance, moved them back in, updated. Same problem. New log attached.

Seems it didn’t attach the first time.

@astrofisher / @OttoKerner should inspect those log files.
Something isn’t happening I think.

Check the clocktime on your server machine. Make sure it is set correctly.
This is important!

Settings - Server - Network - ‘Enable server support for IPv6’ <-- OFF

then clean your agent caches
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202967376-Clearing-Plugin-Channel-Agent-HTTP-Caches

Go into the Agent configuration for TV shows
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheTVDB / TheMovieDatabase
enable/disable some agents and change their position, then move everything back
leave the agent configuration and re-enter it, just to verify your changes do “stick”

restart the server machine
wait a few minutes after the restart

-The clock time on the server is correct.
-The IPv6 setting was off
-I closed PMS, deleted all agent cache folders, restarted PMS.
-I fiddled with the agent settings and confirmed that my changes stick
-I rebooted the server machine and waited awhile (~20-30mins)
-I did a complete Plex Dance with the Firefly folders.

The problem persists :(.

Edit: new log attached.

Are you using an Anti Virus software which tries to intercept encrypted communication?
Which type are you using?

It’s running on Windows Server 2016 Essentials, with just the built-in Windows Defender. No other AV.

  1. Is it up-to date?

  2. Did you use any configuration tools to prevent Windows fetching regularly updated “core certificates”?

  3. try this https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/227341367-Windows-Key-not-valid-for-use-in-specified-state-error-and-transcoding-analysis-issues

  1. Both PMS and Windows are fully up-to-date.
  2. No, I used no configuration tools at all. It’s a clean and normal install.
  3. I closed PMS, renamed the RSA folder. Started PMS, a new RSA folder was created. Did the Plex Dance with the Firefly folders. Still no luck. New logs attached.

Take a look a this thread, please.
There are 2 possible solutions in there, so read it in full please to understand what is done:

May have had some luck here :).

I first tried turning off “Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration”, no results. I then ran IE “as administrator”, browsed to plex.tv, clicked on the certificate and hit “install certificate”. I hit “refresh” on Firefly in PMS and the metadata showed up. I’ll keep testing it and report back later. Thanks.
